Joan Young

Joan Young (born Joan Cecilia Frances Wragge on 1 February 1900 in Newcastle‑upon‑Tyne, United Kingdom) was a distinguished British character actress whose career spanned more than six decades across stage, screen, radio and television. The daughter of music‑hall performers Nellie Blanche C. Parker and Charles Alfred Romaine Wragg (known professionally as Charles Pastor), she grew up in a theatrical household and was largely raised by her grandmother while her parents toured, a circumstance she later recalled gave her a unique perspective on performance and discipline. Educated at convent schools in Bournemouth and France, Young made her first public appearance at age fifteen, playing the jester Jamie in the charitable production A Crown of Sorrows to aid Belgian refugees. Her professional breakthrough arrived in the mid‑1930s when she joined the BBC, delivering satirical revues such as Fictional Fame on Parade (1936) and participating in literary radio adaptations of P. G. Wodehouse’s Sam the Sudden and Charles Reade’s The Cloister and the Hearth in 1938. During World War II she became a familiar voice on the popular series Navy Mixture, cementing her reputation as a versatile radio talent. On stage she earned critical acclaim for roles ranging from the “best Nurse Guiness” in a 1961 revival of George Bernard Shaw’s Heartbreak House at Wyndham’s Theatre to a confrontational performance opposite Laurence Olivier in David Turner’s Semi‑Detached (1962). Young’s screen portfolio, though often composed of supporting parts, includes memorable appearances as Mrs. Barrow in The Fallen Idol (1948), Lady Mayoress in Carry On Constable (1960), and a recurring turn as the witty Lady Chesapeake in the long‑running comedy Big Bad Mouse. In the twilight of her career she returned to the role in 1980 and guest‑starred as Miss Westerman in two episodes of the beloved BBC series All Creatures Great and Small. Off‑stage, she married journalist John Young in 1923, and the couple’s only child, April Young, followed her mother into the entertainment business as an agent. Joan Young passed away on 9 October 1984 at the Royal Masonic Hospital in Hammersmith, London, aged 84, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, humor, and an ever‑present willingness to bring depth to even the smallest of characters.
