Carry On Constable 1960

At a quiet suburban police station, a flu epidemic stretches the staff thin, leaving desks manned by only a skeleton crew. Sergeant Frank Wilkins is relieved to learn that three fresh recruits are due to join, hoping they’ll restore some order and lift the mood on a weary shift.

On their way into the station, the trio—PC Stanley Benson, PC Tom Potter, and PC Charles Constable—inadvertently help bank robbers into their getaway car, only to discover the ruse and feel a flush of embarrassment at their mistake. The newcomers bring a mix of intellect, charm, and superstition to the team, and their arrival is soon followed by the arrival of WPC Gloria Passworthy and Special Constable S.P.C. Timothy Gorse, who complete the roster and add new dynamics to the beat.

Out on the street, the new constables struggle to prove themselves. Benson nearly lands a capture on a plainclothes detective, Constable convinces himself he’s heard a murder when it’s just a radio play, Potter investigates an intruder and ends up having a civil, if surprising, chat with a young woman in the bath about her recently broken relationship, and Gorse is paired with a police dog who proves hard to control. With their careers on the line, they double down, learning from each misstep and growing more confident as a unit.

Their turning point comes during a wages robbery, when the four officers work in concert to track down the getaway. Benson and Potter locate the getaway car (a Plymouth Cambridge), and the team closes in on the thieves, arresting them and recovering the stolen money. The operation proves the rookies’ worth and their potential to contribute under pressure.

Back at headquarters, Inspector Mills is impressed by their efficiency and is promoted to a training position, while Sergeant Frank Wilkins steps up to fill the vacancy and take the lead on the floor. The department’s evolving dynamics bring a hint of romance and personal growth to the story, as Charlie Constable finds his girl—with a little help from Sgt. Laura Moon—and finally shakes off his lingering superstition, embracing a forward-looking path with the rest of the team.
