Maudlin Street Secondary Modern School is the setting for a gently starched comedy about ambition, loyalty, and the tricky dance between teachers and pupils. In this term’s routine, William Wakefield has spent two decades at the school and now serves as acting headmaster. When he spots a newspaper ad for a headmaster position at a brand-new school near his birthplace, he quietly decides to throw his hat in the ring and pursue the post.

Complications multiply when a Ministry of Education Inspector arrives to assess the school, alongside the renowned child psychiatrist Alistair Grigg. To smooth the path for the inspection, Wakefield calls on his staff to keep everything in order during the visitors’ tour. The conference room fills with the school’s seasoned teachers—Gregory Adams, the science master; Edwin Milton, the English master; Michael Bean, the music teacher; Sarah Allcock, the gym mistress; and Grace Short(/actor/hattie-jacques), the maths teacher—while the senior pupil Robin Stevens quietly overhears Wakefield’s plan: the headmaster intends to leave at the term’s end.

Hearing that Wakefield might depart, the pupils plot to sabotage anything that could earn him praise. As the inspection begins, the students’ misbehavior in every class becomes a test of the staff’s resolve and their care for the school’s future. Yet beneath the surface, a spark begins to glow: Alistair Grigg takes a liking to Sarah Allcock, the gym mistress, and there is an obvious, mutual attraction between them.

Miss Wheeler, the inspector, is repelled by the hostile antics of the pupils but finds warmth in Adams’s class. Adams, a nervous yet charming figure, awakens in Miss Wheeler a protective, almost maternal feeling. Wakefield, aware of the shifting emotional currents, asks Adams to pursue a more direct approach with Miss Wheeler in order to sway the visiting authorities and secure his own chance at the new post. Adams is stunned by the request, but he ultimately agrees, hoping to do what he believes is right.

As the week unfolds, the pupils’ attempts to derail the prize-giving culminate in a confrontation in Wakefield’s study. Through careful cross-examination, Wakefield learns why they have been acting out: they simply do not want to see him leave. Moved by their affection and loyalty, Wakefield reveals that he does not plan to depart after all, and he promises to return for the next term.

With the mood shifting, Miss Wheeler’s outlook changes as well. Buoyed by her growing feelings and the possibility of a positive report, she hints to the Ministry that the staff-pupil relationships at the school are strong and supportive, a nuance that could influence the broader view of the school’s atmosphere.

The story unfolds with warmth and humor rather than harsh judgment, painting a portrait of a close-knit school community where experience, kindness, and a touch of romance help navigate change. The central figures—[William Wakefield], [Alistair Grigg], [Sarah Allcock], [Gregory Adams], [Edwin Milton], and the rest of the staff—are drawn with humanity, and the pupils’ devotion to their headmaster provides the emotional backbone of this slice-of-life comedy.
