After the war, Valerie Martin arrives and takes up residence at the home of Dominic Danges, a French Resistance novelist, presenting herself as his widow, and she has written under his name the best-selling novel Hell is Sold Out. The publisher later discovers that the last book published under his name was a republication of her diary, Boundless Ecstasy, found among his writings when he was thought dead; he had been a prisoner during the war. When he returns home, a tangle of reputations unfolds as there is keen interest in the book for serialization, a possible film, and a chance to reshape his image in the US as a former ladies’ man. They argue and, to return to Sweden, she calls on Pierre Bonnet, a fellow prisoner of Dominic, and confesses that she and Dominic are unmarried and do not want Dominic to know her whereabouts. A love triangle develops as Pierre Bonnet falls in love with her. Pierre falls ill from shrapnel in his head, and Valerie is exposed when she encounters Dominic in Pierre’s room. Dominic makes it clear that he is not the author of the bestseller. The two men share a candid conversation, and then Pierre Bonnet misleads Valerie into believing that Dominic has dedicated his latest work to her. In the end, they reconcile.
