What's After the Movie
Jeffrey Michael Tambor (born July 8, 1944) is an American retired actor whose career spanned nearly five decades, beginning in the early 1970s and concluding in 2020. Raised in a Conservative Jewish family in San Francisco, he was the son of Eileen (née Salzberg) and Bernard Tambor, a flooring contractor. After graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School, Tambor earned a B.A. in acting at San Francisco State University and later a master’s degree from Wayne State University, where he honed his craft in repertory theater before moving to Broadway. His breakthrough television role came as the uptight neighbor Jeffrey Brookes on The Ropers (1979‑80), and he quickly became a versatile character actor celebrated for his work on The Larry Sanders Show (1992‑98) as the narcissistic sidekick Hank Kingsley.
Tambor’s most iconic performances include the scheming patriarch George Bluth Sr. on Arrested Development (2003‑06, 2013, 2018‑19) and the groundbreaking transgender lead Maura Pfefferman on Transparent (2014‑17), for which he won a Golden Globe and two Primetime Emmy Awards, becoming the first actor to receive an Emmy for portraying a transgender character. His film résumé features memorable supporting turns such as There’s Something About Mary (1998), Hellboy (2004) and its sequel, The Hangover trilogy, and The Death of Stalin (2017). In addition to live‑action work, Tambor contributed voice talent to The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Tangled. His personal life includes marriages to Katie Mitchell (1991‑2000) and Kasia Ostlun (2001‑present), with five children. Controversies arose in 2017‑18 with sexual‑misconduct allegations, leading to his departure from Transparent. Despite the disputes, Tambor remains respected for his dynamic range, comedic timing, and his contributions to television’s golden age.
