Ian McDiarmid is a Scottish actor and director renowned for his versatile stage work and iconic screen presence. Born on 11 August 1944 in Carnoustie, Angus, Scotland, he discovered a passion for theatre at the age of five after accompanying his father to a local performance, a moment he later described as both fascinating and intimidating. After earning a Master of Arts in psychology from Queen's College, Dundee (then part of the University of St Andrews), he abandoned a potential academic career to train at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he won a gold medal in 1968 for his dedication to the craft. McDiarmid made his professional stage debut as Hamlet in 1972 and quickly joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1974, appearing in productions such as The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, and King Lear. His theatrical excellence earned him an Olivier Award for Best Actor for Insignificance (1982) and a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for Faith Healer (2006), confirming his status as a distinguished performer on both sides of the Atlantic. Beyond the stage, McDiarmid achieved worldwide fame as the sinister Emperor Palpatine and Darth Sidious in the Star Wars saga, first appearing in Return of the Jedi (1983) and later reprising the role in the prequel trilogy and the sequel film The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
