George Rigaud
George Rigaud, born Pedro Jorge Rigato Delissetche on 11 August 1905 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was a prolific Argentine actor who left an indelible mark on European and Latin American cinema through a career that spanned nearly five decades. After his family relocated to France during his childhood, Rigaud entered the French film industry in the early 1930s, initially billing himself as Georges Rigaud and quickly gaining recognition for his leading role opposite Annabella in the 1933 hit Bastille Day. Throughout the 1930s he appeared in a wide array of French productions, ranging from comedies such as Charley's Aunt (1936) to adventure dramas like Sarati the Terrible (1937), demonstrating a versatile screen presence that appealed to both critics and audiences. In 1941 he returned to his native Argentina, where he resumed his cinematic work and contributed to the local film scene during a period of significant artistic development. The post‑war years saw Rigaud re‑establish himself in Europe; by 1956 he had settled permanently in Spain, a move that opened new avenues in Spanish, Italian and French genre cinema, especially in the thriving sword‑and‑sandals and giallo movements of the 1960s. Notable later roles include his performance as a Spanish police inspector in The Happy Thieves (1961), a chilling appearance in the horror classic Horror Express (1972), and a supporting turn in the cult thriller Eyeball (1975). Over the course of his career Rigaud amassed credits in 194 films, working alongside legends such as Sophia Loren, Klaus Kinski and Peter Cushing, and earning a reputation as a reliable character actor who could effortlessly shift between heroic leads and nuanced antagonists. His life was tragically cut short when he died in a road accident in Madrid on 17 January 1984, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to be celebrated by film historians and genre enthusiasts alike.
