Gary Barrymore Raymond, born on 20 April 1935 in Brixton, London, England, emerged from a theatrical family that profoundly shaped his artistic destiny. The youngest of three brothers and one of a set of twins, his early life was marked by tragedy when his mother succumbed to tuberculosis just nine months after their birth, leaving the twins in the care of a devoted nanny. Demonstrating early promise, Raymond earned a scholarship to the Gateway School at eleven, where he remained until sixteen before honing his craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His stage career blossomed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1950s, where he tackled iconic roles such as Macbeth, Oberon, and Claudius, establishing a reputation for both classical gravitas and versatile performance. Transitioning to the screen, Raymond debuted as Charles Stuart (King Charles II) in The Moonraker (1958) and rapidly accumulated a portfolio of notable films, including Look Back in Anger (1958), Suddenly, Last Summer (1959) alongside Katharine Hepburn, The Millionairess (1960) opposite Sophia Loren, and the epic El Cid (1961) with Charlton Heston. His cinematic range extended to fantasy (Jason and the Argonauts, 1963) and religious drama (The Greatest Story Ever Told, 1965), where he portrayed the apostle Simon Bar Jonah, later Saint Peter.
