Born on 4 August 1969 in Hillingdon, England, she grew up partly in New Canaan, Connecticut before returning to the UK, where she attended Mayfield School and later earned a degree at Durham University. While at Durham she directed Murder in the Cathedral and performed comedy in the Durham Revue, indicating an early blend of dramatic and comedic talent. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) she cut her teeth in repertory theatres such as the Royal Exchange in Manchester, York Theatre Royal and Sheffield Crucible, before moving into television and radio with the BBC. Her breakthrough film role came in Stephen Fry’s Bright Young Things, where her performance as Agatha earned her award nominations and opened doors to collaborations with Mike Leigh, Woody Allen and others, leading to memorable parts in Vera Drake, Mr. Turner, Scoop and Swallows and Amazons.
