Ewan Stewart

Andrew Ewan Stewart (born 26 August 1957) is a Scottish actor whose career spans film, television, stage and video‑game voice work. Born in Glasgow, he is the son of celebrated Scottish entertainer Andy Stewart and grew up with his mother Sheila in Arbroath before attending the prestigious Clifton Hall School and Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh from 1966 to 1974. After moving to London in 1975 he began working in repertory theatres while studying drama, quickly gaining notice when his first television appearance—a commercial for Scottish “Bluebell” matches—led to a role in the 1979 TV remake of All Quiet on the Western Front. Stewart’s early screen work was followed by a memorable turn as Dr Robbie Meadows on the beloved sitcom Only Fools and Horses in 1989, cementing his reputation as a reliable character actor. His most internationally recognised role came a decade later when he portrayed First Officer Murdoch in James Cameron’s epic Titanic (1997), a performance that highlighted his ability to convey authority and vulnerability under pressure. Beyond the big screen, Stewart explored interactive media by providing the voice and motion‑capture performance for Master Shen in the video‑game Heavenly Sword (2007), demonstrating his versatility across emerging entertainment formats. He has also been considered for high‑profile film roles such as James Bond in 2005, reflecting industry respect for his talent. On stage, Stewart has delivered critically acclaimed performances ranging from classic Shakespearean parts at the Globe to contemporary dramas at the National Theatre of Scotland, showcasing a breadth that includes Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing and MacDuff in Dunsinane.

Off‑screen, Stewart resides in London with his wife, English actress Clare Byam‑Shaw, and together they raise two children. He remains active in both screen and theatrical projects, continuing to contribute to British cultural life through a steady stream of diverse roles that underline his enduring commitment to the craft.
