Emilio Buale

Emilio Buale, born Ludwig Emilio Buale Coka on 26 November 1972 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, is a distinguished Equatoguinean‑born Spanish actor whose career spans more than two and a half decades. At the age of six he migrated with his family to Madrid, where he grew up in a multicultural environment that later helped him become a polyglot fluent in Spanish, English, French, and the Bubi language Bube. Although initially studying to become a construction engineer and working as a fireman, his destiny changed in 1995 when casting director Paco Pino spotted him waiting in a subway station and offered him the role of Ombasi in Imanol Uribe’s film Bwana (1996). Accepting the part, Buale travelled to Almería and made his cinematic debut alongside celebrated Spanish actors Andrés Pajares and María Barranco, marking the start of an extensive filmography. He continued to build his reputation through a blend of film, television, and theatre work, spending several years with the National Classical Theater Company of Spain, where he performed in productions such as “La entretenida,” “Amar después de la muerte,” “Los chicos de la banda,” and “Yonquis y Yanquis.” Buale’s versatility shines through his numerous television appearances, including Código fuego (2003) and an episode of La que se avecina (2007), often portraying characters that echo his real‑life experience as a fireman. Internationally, he gained widespread recognition for his compelling performance as Baharat in the critically acclaimed dystopian thriller The Platform (El Hoyo) (2019), a role that highlighted his ability to convey deep humanity within a stark, allegorical setting. Despite his success on screen, Buale remains committed to his original profession, continuing to serve as a firefighter in Madrid, a testament to his grounded character and dedication to public service.
