David Paymer

David Paymer (born David Emmanuel Paymer on August 30, 1954) is an American actor, director, and comedian whose career spans more than four decades. Raised in Oceanside, New York, he is the son of Sylvia, a travel agent who fled Belgium during the Nazi occupation, and Marvin Paymer, a pianist‑turned‑scrap‑metal worker, and grew up in a culturally rich Jewish household with his brother Steve. After his parents’ divorce in 1973, Paymer pursued higher education at the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts in theater and psychology, a combination that laid the groundwork for his nuanced character work. He entered Hollywood with a modest debut as a cab driver in the 1979 action comedy The In‑Laws, quickly distinguishing himself through a blend of comedic timing and dramatic depth that would become his hallmark.
