Stand-up comedian Buddy Young Jr. rises to television stardom with the help of his brother, Stan as his agent and manager, but their bond strains as Buddy’s fame wanes and his ego grows too large. Across a series of flashbacks, the film follows the brothers in their childhood, entertaining their family in the living room and planting the seeds of a shared dream that will push Buddy toward the bright lights of show business.

Buddy builds a career as a comic in the Catskills, a place where laughter and culture collide in resort life, and there he meets his future wife, Elaine. The Catskills become the cradle of his early success, shaping his stage persona and hinting at the personal costs of celebrity. As Buddy’s star climbs, his confidence swells into swagger, and the interplay between ambition and affection begins to fracture the family that supported him.

The rise brings a big break: his own Saturday night television show. Yet Buddy’s biting, provocative material tests the limits of those around him, even as the public eats it up. His brother’s cautions go unheeded, and the show suffers for it. The nadir arrives when his stand-up act on the Ed Sullivan Show is slated to air right after the Beatles’ first U.S. appearance, a prime moment that ends up undermining his performance and undermining his momentum. Frustration boils over into a furious tirade, and he quits in anger, his career slipping away from him.

Decades later, Buddy is an aging figure, estranged from Susan, his daughter, and distant from Stan, who remains a complicated anchor in his life. A spark of redemption appears when a young agent named Annie Wells Annie Wells discovers him and offers a lifeline—work, a film role with a major director, and a chance to prove he still has something left to give. But old habits die hard, and Buddy’s self-destructive tendencies threaten to erase the second chance before it truly begins.

In the pursuit of repair, Buddy confronts the impact of his choices on the people who loved him most. He ultimately chooses to honor the family’s past by passing along the money Stan had given him from their mother’s estate to his daughter Susan and by taking the stage again, this time in retirement homes where the simple act of making people laugh becomes the measure of his redemption. The story culminates with a quiet, intimate gesture: his brother presents a painting he made of the two of them as children in their parents’ living room—the place where their journey into show business began—leaving Buddy to reflect on what truly matters beyond fame.
