Spoilers ahead
In 1936, Joe Louis, the undefeated African American heavyweight, trains under Jack Blackburn and seems invincible. A film of his bout against Paulino Uzcudun in Madison Square Garden falls into the hands of Joe Jacobs, a Jewish-American boxing manager, who brings the footage to his client, Max Schmeling. Schmeling, a forward-thinking strategist, studies Louis’s fights and notices a telltale pattern: Louis tends to drop his guard right after delivering a certain punch. This insight motivates Schmeling to pursue a fight with Louis, setting the stage for a high-stakes confrontation that would capture the world’s attention.
