What's After the Movie

Damien Chazelle

Damien Chazelle was born on January 19, 1985 in Providence, Rhode Island to a culturally diverse family; his father Bernard is a French‑American computer‑science professor at Princeton, and his mother Celia, of English‑Canadian descent, teaches medieval history. Raised in Princeton, he attended a Hebrew school for four years despite his Catholic upbringing, an experience that later informed his nuanced storytelling. From an early age he pursued jazz drumming, inspired by a demanding high‑school studio band teacher whose intensity sparked the character of Terence Fletcher in Whiplash. Recognizing his own limits as a performer, he shifted his focus back to filmmaking, enrolling in Harvard’s Visual and Environmental Studies program where he graduated in 2007. At Harvard he roomed with composer Justin Hurwitz in Currier House, and together they formed the indie‑pop group Chester French, laying the foundation for a long‑lasting creative partnership. His senior thesis, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, debuted at Tribeca in 2009 and earned critical praise, marking the first step of a career that would soon redefine contemporary cinema.

Chazelle’s breakthrough arrived with Whiplash (2014), a tense, rhythm‑driven drama that originated from a script he kept hidden in a drawer before it surfaced on The Black List and eventually became a short for Sundance. The film secured five Oscar nominations, winning three, and propelled him to direct the dazzling musical La La Land (2016), which garnered fourteen Academy Award nominations and earned him the Best Director Oscar at age 32 — the youngest ever to win. He followed this with the critically‑acclaimed biopic First Man (2018), earning a Visual Effects Oscar, and the ambitious period piece Babylon (2022), which sparked polarized reviews but demonstrated his willingness to tackle risky, large‑scale projects. In television, he directed the first two episodes of Netflix’s The Eddy (2020), and he continues to expand his portfolio through production deals, including a first‑look pact with Paramount and upcoming projects ranging from a prison drama to an Evel Knievel biopic. Married to producer Olivia Hamilton, Damien is a bilingual filmmaker fluent in French and a father of two, balancing family life with a relentless drive to push cinematic boundaries.
