What's After the Movie
Charles Martin Smith is an American actor, director and writer whose career spans more than five decades, beginning with his breakout role as Terry “The Toad” Fields in George Lucas’s cult classic American Graffiti (1973). Born on 30 October 1953 in Van Nuys, California, he grew up in a creative family—his father Frank Smith was a cartoonist and his uncle Paul Smith an animator for Walter Lantz Studios—giving him early exposure to the film industry. After being discovered in a high‑school production of Man of La Mancha, Smith earned a B.A. in Theatre from California State University, Northridge and quickly moved into feature films, appearing in titles such as The Spikes Gang (1974), The Buddy Holly Story (1978) and the sci‑fi thriller Starman (1984). His performance as a scientist in the environmentally themed Never Cry Wolf (1983) was a turning point, prompting him to relocate to the rugged north‑west of British Columbia, where he has lived ever since. Beyond acting, Smith has built a substantial directing résumé that includes family‑friendly hits like Air Bud (1997), the heartfelt marine‑rescue dramas Dolphin Tale (2011) and Dolphin Tale 2 (2014), as well as the critically‑acclaimed Arctic adventure The Snow Walker (2003), for which he received Genie Award nominations for both Best Director and Best Screenplay. He also contributed to television, directing episodes of Space: Above and Beyond, the pilot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and numerous Canadian series. Smith’s work has earned him seven Leo Award nominations and a BAFTA Scotland Award nod for Stone of Destiny (2008). He remains active in both front‑of‑camera and behind‑the‑scenes roles, continuing to shape North‑American cinema with his versatile talent.
