André Bourvil, born André Robert Raimbourg on 27 July 1917 in the small Normandy hamlet of Prétot‑Vicquemare, emerged from a modest rural upbringing to become one of France’s most beloved screen personalities. After his father fell in the First World War, the future star spent his childhood in the nearby village of Bourville, a name he later adopted as his stage surname. Bourvil’s early years were marked by a love of music and performance; he began singing on local radio before joining the theatrical troupe that would launch his film career in the early 1940s. His breakout came with supporting roles that showcased his gentle, naïve charm, a persona that resonated deeply with post‑war audiences yearning for humor and humanity. In 1943 he married Jeanne Lefrique, a partnership that endured until his untimely death, and the couple raised two sons, Philippe and Dominique, who later followed his artistic footsteps. Bourvil’s cinematic legacy is defined by an extraordinary range that spanned from slapstick comedy to poignant drama. His final roles, such as the stoic Commissaire Mattei in Jean‑Pierre Melville’s Le Cercle rouge (1970), demonstrated an actor capable of depth and gravitas, ensuring that his influence endured well beyond his premature death at age 53.
