What's After the Movie
Vivian Arthur Rivers Malet was born on 24 September 1927 in the coastal town of Lee‑on‑the‑Solent, Hampshire, England, the son of Henry Guy Rivers Malet and Olga Muriel Balfour, descending from the historic Malet baronets. After a formative childhood in England, he emigrated to the United States in the early 1950s, where he Anglicised his given name to Arthur and quickly immersed himself in the thriving New York theatre scene. His talents on stage earned him two Drama Desk Awards in 1957, marking him as a distinguished character actor even before his screen debut. Over the next decade he became a reliable presence on Broadway and Off‑Broadway, mastering a range of supporting roles that showcased his uncanny ability to portray characters far older than his actual years, a skill that would define much of his film career.
Arthur Malet’s transition to screen was marked by a series of memorable performances that cemented his reputation as a versatile character actor. In Disney’s beloved classic Mary Poppins (1964) he appeared as the diminutive yet endearing Mr. Dawes, Jr., while his gravitas shone in Norman Jewison’s In the Heat of the Night (1967) as undertaker Ted Ulam. He continued to delight audiences as the elderly villager in Mel Brooks’s parody Young Frankenstein (1974), the ominous graveyard keeper in John Carpenter’s horror staple Halloween (1978), and the whimsical Tootles in Steven Spielberg’s adventure Hook (1991). Beyond live‑action, Malet lent his distinctive voice to animated works, most notably as Mr. Ages in The Secret of NIMH (1982) and its sequel The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue (1998). His extensive television résumé includes guest spots on iconic series such as The Donna Reed Show, The Rifleman, Bewitched, The Andy Griffith Show, and a recurring role in the short‑lived 1983 adaptation of Casablanca. After retiring from acting in 1998, Malet lived quietly in Santa Monica, California, where he passed away on 18 May 2013 at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of beloved performances that continue to charm new generations of film and television fans.
