She comes from a renowned family of actors and directors, including her father, John Huston, and grandfather, Walter Huston. She debuted in her father's film A Walk with Love and Death (1969). Her career took flight in the 1980s with her role in Prizzi's Honor (1985), which saw her become the third generation of her family to receive an Academy Award. In the subsequent years, Huston continued to impress both critics and audiences with films like Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), The Witches (1990), and The Addams Family films (1991–93).
Huston has also directed films and collaborated with directors such as Wes Anderson. Her directorial works include Bastard Out of Carolina (1996) and Agnes Browne (1999).
