What's After the Movie
André Morell (born Cecil André Mesritz, 20 August 1909 – 28 November 1978) was a distinguished English actor whose career spanned over four decades of stage, screen, and television work. Born in London to André and Rosa Mesritz, he initially trained as a motor engineer before turning to acting professionally in 1934, first using his family name and later adopting the stage name Morell in 1936, a change formalised by deed poll in 1938. His early years were marked by a solid classical foundation at the Old Vic, where he performed opposite legends such as Alec Guinness in Hamlet and under John Gielgud in The Tempest. He prized his turn as Mercutio in a 1939 Old Vic production of Romeo and Juliet as his favourite role, a performance praised for its nuanced cynicism and humour. After a wartime hiatus serving as a major in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Morell returned to the stage, earning accolades for his Kent in King Lear and his titular Timon in Timon of Athens; critics highlighted his dependable, authoritative presence and his catholic approach to varied theatrical genres.\n\nIn the late 1950s Morell achieved iconic screen recognition, embodying Professor Bernard Quatermass in the BBC’s Quatermass and the Pit (1958‑59) and delivering a refined, faithful portrayal of Doctor John H. Watson opposite Peter Cushing’s Sherlock Holmes in Hammer’s The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959). His film résumé includes roles in two Best‑Picture winners—The Bridge on the River Kwai (as Colonel Green) and Ben‑Hur (as Sextus)—as well as a series of memorable Hammer horror features such as The Plague of the Zombies and The Mummy’s Shroud. Beyond acting, Morell served as vice‑president and later president of Equity, defending the interests of British performers. He remained a prolific presence on television, appearing in classics like The Avengers, Doctor Who, and The Professionals. A heavy smoker who quit in 1976, he succumbed to lung cancer in 1978, leaving behind his wife, actress Joan Greenwood, and their son, actor Jason Morell.
