What's After the Movie
Alec Craig, born Alexander Younger Craig on 30 March 1884 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, was a prolific character actor whose career spanned the golden age of Hollywood and left an indelible mark on classic cinema. The son of James Chapman Craig and Isabella Craig, he grew up in a modest Scottish household before marrying Margaret L. Craig in Edinburgh on 24 September 1919, a partnership that would later accompany him across the Atlantic. Shortly after their wedding the couple emigrated to the United States, arriving on 2 November 1919, where Craig sought opportunities in the burgeoning film industry and eventually became a naturalized American citizen on 14 July 1939, holding dual British‑American citizenship. Craig’s screen debut came in 1934 with a small, uncredited role in The Little Minister, and he quickly became typecast as the stereotypical tight‑fisted Scotsman, a niche that earned him steady work throughout the 1930s and early 1940s. His most recognizable performances include the gruff sailor McCoy in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and the kindly farmhand Tim in National Velvet (1944), both of which showcase his skill at bringing authenticity and subtle humor to supporting characters. Over his eleven‑year career, Craig appeared in over a hundred films, ranging from major studio pictures like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) to lesser‑known B‑movies, often delivering memorable moments despite limited screen time. Beyond his professional life, Craig was a devoted family man; he and Margaret welcomed a son, James C. Craig, born on 4 December 1922 in Berkeley, California. Tragically, his promising career was cut short when he succumbed to tuberculosis on 25 June 1945 in Glendale, California, at the age of 61. He was laid to rest at Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of beloved character performances that continue to be appreciated by classic film enthusiasts.
