This type of summary is not for pitching or marketing; it’s a technical exercise to analyze the scene’s internal mechanics and ensure it has a compelling, dynamic arc. It answers the question: “How do the characters get from where they are at the beginning of the scene to where they are at the end?”

To create a beat change summary, one breaks down the scene into its constituent beats and describes the shift that each one causes. This reveals the scene’s emotional choreography and power dynamics.
Consider a scene where a detective (Miller) is interrogating a suspect (Jones):
