Ratan Kumar leads a comfortable middle-class life with his wife, Pushpa, and their son, Sunder. When Balram Singh asks him to steal, he agrees but secretly pockets a suitcase full of diamonds. The act inflames Balram Singh’s temper, who burns their home; believing his wife is dead, Ratan Kumar flees. He is found and cared for by Dr. Saigal, who takes him to the palace of the distraught Maharani Maanwati—a ruler who has just lost her husband and son, yet is soothed when she learns that Sunder is her son.

Years pass and Ratan Kumar, now calling himself Ramesh, works for the Maharani. As Sunder grows up, the Maharani discovers Ramesh’s existence, notes the resemblance to her late husband, and marries him. Pushpa re-emerges, and a furious Maharani tries to kill Ramesh, but ends up taking her own life. Before dying, she asks Sunder to avenge her death.

Sunder comes to hate Ramesh, not realizing that Ramesh is his father. Ramesh is chased by the police, captured, tried, and sentenced to several years in jail. When he returns, he becomes an underworld don with one goal: to bring Balram down. Meanwhile, Sunder, who now calls himself Shyam, is also pursuing Ramesh to avenge him and has befriended Ravi, Ramesh’s second son, born during the years in prison. When Balram learns this, he plots to use Shyam to wipe out Ramesh and his entire family.

Later, Shyam discovers that Ramesh is his real father and innocent. It now falls to Shyam (formerly Sunder) to save his father and family from Balram.
