Tyler Hanson, Taylor John Smith, is a high school student who believes he’s found a perfect match in his girlfriend Ali Hewitt, known to friends as Ali, Halston Sage. Their relationship hits a rough patch at a party when Tyler discovers Ali used to be a heavy partier—drinking, mixing with crowds, and sleeping around. The revelation shatters his trust, and the couple abruptly breaks up, leaving Tyler hurt and confused.

Outside the party, Tyler crosses paths with the enigmatic [Holly] Bella Thorne. They connect, party, and end up spending the rest of the weekend together in her sprawling house. Holly paints a quiet, almost protective picture, telling Tyler that her father died and that her stepmother travels a lot, and the weekend feels like a magical escape. Tyler leaves with a sense that what he found with Holly is something special, almost forgetting the pain of Ali for the moment.

Back at school, Tyler and Ali reconcile, and he starts noticing Holly again, who reveals she now attends their school to surprise him. Despite his attempts to cut Holly out of his life, she weaves herself into his world, befriending Ali and Tyler’s friends, including Gil Nash Grier and Lydia Anna Akana. Lydia grows suspicious of Holly when she notices a conspicuous lack of social media presence, a strange inconsistency that gnaws at her trust. Time passes, and Tyler begins to fear the hold Holly has over him.

When Tyler meets Holly’s stepmother, Corinne Brigid Brannagh, she reveals that Holly is on medication for a mental disorder, a detail that colors Holly’s behavior in a darker light. The next day, Holly causes Lydia to experience a severe allergic reaction after overhearing Lydia tell Ali she’s skeptical of Holly’s story and intent. The tension tightens around Tyler as he becomes more entangled in Holly’s web.

Holly later confronts Tyler at his home, expressing a desire to rekindle their relationship. When he refuses, she tells Ali that Tyler slept with her, planting seeds of doubt and jealousy. On the beach, Tyler finally confesses everything to Ali, who responds with a firm resolve to move on, declaring that she never wants to talk to him again.

Holly escalates her manipulation by getting Tyler suspended, accusing him of assault. While he’s away from school, he delves into Holly’s past and learns her real first name—Elizabeth—and uncovers a troubling history: she violently assaulted another female student over a boy and was committed to a mental institution. The realization shatters whatever protection Tyler thought Holly had offered him.

That night, Holly kidnap Ali and lures Tyler to her house by sending a photo of Ali unconscious. Corinne returns home and fights to rescue Ali, but Holly sneaks up behind her and suffocates Corinne with a plastic bag. Tyler arrives, armed with a fire poker, and finds Ali unconscious and bound mid-air to the ceiling, her forehead bleeding. He frees her, and they escape into the night, but Holly stops them at gunpoint. A struggle ensues, Tyler is shot in the shoulder, and Ali grabs the fire poker to stab Holly, ending the immediate threat.

Holly, still alive, is wheeled into the back of an ambulance, where a Paramedic, Jensen LeFlore, vows to never leave her side, even as the tension between truth and obsession lingers in the air.

In the final scene, Tyler and Ali attend his younger sister Tiffany’s birthday party, a quieter, more intimate setting that frames the story’s end. Tyler narrates that what he previously sought—a fantasy of love—wasn’t real, and that he’s learned a hard but necessary lesson. He now concentrates on the genuine, steady love he shares with Ali, choosing trust and care over reckless excitement.

Throughout this tense, emotionally charged arc, the film threads themes of desire, control, and the blurry line between adoration and danger, offering a cautionary tale about how quickly a fantasy can overshadow reality—and how fragile trust can become when manipulation masquerades as devotion. Tiffany Farrah Mackenzie makes a poignant appearance at the party scene, underscoring the family dynamics at play and the stakes of the protagonists’ choices.
