Yellow Rose 2019

In a small town in Texas, the story revolves around Rose Garcia, a young undocumented Filipina girl with dreams of becoming a musician, while her mother, Priscilla Garcia, works tirelessly at a motel and wishes for Rose to further her education as a tribute to her late father. Rose’s aspirations tug at the heartstrings of the mother-daughter duo as she frequently visits her friend, Elliot Blatnik, who works at a music shop. During one of these visits, Elliot invites her to Austin, but when Rose seeks her mother’s permission to go, Priscilla firmly denies her request.

In a moment of frustration, Priscilla expresses her worries about the failed attempts to secure the assistance of an immigration lawyer, lamenting the loss of the money she entrusted to them for her husband’s citizenship. Undeterred, Rose and Elliot concoct a plan to deceive Priscilla into believing they are attending church while they actually embark on their journey to Austin. During the drive, Elliot gives Rose a fake ID and encourages her to hone her singing skills.

Upon their arrival in Austin, the pair makes their way to the Broken Spoke, a lively bar where they indulge in underage drinking. Here, Rose meets country artist Dale Watson, who is impressed by her musical knowledge and later enjoys a dance with Elliot. However, after a night of revelry, they return to find that Priscilla has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In a hasty retreat, they come back to the motel to collect Priscilla’s belongings, discovering a letter revealing that Rose’s aunt, Gail, possesses the power of attorney and might assist in securing legal citizenship for them.

Upon reaching Gail’s house, Rose learns that Gail is unaware of the dire circumstances facing Priscilla, which is indicative of their strained relationship over the years. During this time, Priscilla faces interrogation from immigration officials who inform her of the impending deportation due to her previous noncompliance. Rose inadvertently overhears a heated discussion between Gail and her husband, Mark, where Mark expresses his reluctance to involve himself for fear of jeopardizing their safety. Feeling unwanted and recognizing her burden, Rose decides to leave the house after receiving Gail’s phone number and some cash.

As Rose seeks refuge, she finds shelter at the Breaking Spoke, courtesy of Jolene, a bartender she befriended earlier. Meanwhile, Rose receives a call from Priscilla, who mistakenly believes Rose is living with her aunt; the call subsequently divulges Priscilla’s embarrassment regarding their family’s strained ties. While working at the Broken Spoke, Rose develops a camaraderie with Jose, another employee navigating the challenges of undocumented status.

In a further twist of fate, Rose meets Dale again, who imparts more guitar knowledge and encourages her to embrace her talent. During a conversation, Priscilla expresses her desperate hope that Rose should stay with Gail; if she chooses otherwise, she would prefer to be deported back to Manila with her mother. This emotional plea leaves Rose reflecting deeply as she spends a sorrowful night drinking with Elliot.

However, their peaceful existence shatters when ICE conducts a raid at the Broken Spoke, leading to Jose’s capture while Rose narrowly escapes thanks to a sympathetic agent. The following day, Jolene informs Rose that she can no longer provide shelter but gives her Dale’s contact information. Eventually, she finds herself residing in Dale’s trailer, where he motivates her to channel her experiences into songwriting.

As time moves on, Elliot visits Rose to inquire about her mother, revealing that Priscilla’s impending deportation looms over them like a dark cloud. With mounting pressure, Rose heads to a detention center accompanied by Elliot’s cousin. There, she has a short yet heartfelt conversation with Priscilla, who shares the dehumanizing realities faced by immigrants in detention. Sadly, their brief moment together is cut short, leaving Rose with a heavy heart.

As summer comes to a close, Rose grapples with the creative process of writing a demo. In a candid moment with Dale, she shares her love for country music while recounting an experience from a talent show that left her feeling labeled as the “Yellow Rose.” Nonetheless, with Dale’s support, she attempts to muster her courage and showcase her talents.

Dale orchestrates a community gathering where he and Rose perform together to a supportive crowd, including Elliot and Jolene. Subsequently, Jolene helps record Rose’s singing, while Priscilla experiences deportation back to Manila. Meanwhile, Dale presents Rose with a new guitar, but the joy is short-lived as her living situation becomes increasingly precarious due to her mother’s deportation and Gail’s inability to help.

In a moment of desperation, Rose implores Dale to adopt her in hopes of remaining in the U.S., but he explains that her circumstances may only be temporary. Heartbroken, Rose departs seeking refuge elsewhere. As Priscilla acclimates to life back in the Philippines, Rose finds herself in a tough financial situation, leading her to take a job as a motel cleaner.

In a poignant call with her mother, Rose expresses her longing and emotional turmoil, stating, “This is home for me.” Following the call, Rose reconnects with Dale, and their collaboration leads to the creation of a new song. The film culminates in an uplifting concert, where Rose is reunited with Elliot, culminating in a passionate kiss just before performing. Rose and Dale take to the stage to perform “I Ain’t Going Down,” bringing together a supportive audience that includes Elliot, Jolene, Gail, and even Priscilla, who watches proudly from afar, connected to Rose’s journey back home.
