John Wisdom is a young man just out of college. On the night of his high school graduation, he gets drunk and steals a car. With a grand theft auto conviction he is branded a felon, and as a result cannot hold down a decent job. Seeing no future for himself, Wisdom takes a left turn: he decides to become a criminal for the people, evocative of Robin Hood.
After seeing news reports about impoverished farmers and working-class people being sent to the bank to pay ownership debts, Wisdom goes on a bank robbing spree with his girlfriend, Karen Simmons. He had planned to operate alone, but she insists on giving him a ride on the first job, and therefore inadvertently becomes his accomplice.
They do not steal money, but erase loan and mortgage records, buying time for the poor to pay their debts. At a small motel, the owner recognises them. Not able to keep it to himself, he and half a dozen people come to thank them, bearing gifts. Among them is a new vehicle.
However, the FBI is after them. The agents shoot up the motel at which the couple had been staying, only to find that Wisdom and Karen have already gone.
A panicky Karen eventually kills a local sheriff who recognises her in a convenience store. She and Wisdom make a run for the Canada–United States border, but when Karen is shot by a police helicopter, Wisdom leaves her in the care of some high school students and their teacher.
Wisdom resumes his flight on foot on the school grounds, first unloading his gun before he is surrounded by police and federal agents at the football field. As he appears to be reaching for his gun, he is riddled with gunfire and dies.
John wakes up where the film started, in his parents’ bathroom. He emerges from the bathtub and proceeds to get ready for his job interview. His entire story has apparently been a daydream.

Graduation night car theft
John Wisdom, a young man just out of college, gets drunk on the night of his graduation and steals a car. The act leads to a grand theft auto conviction that brands him a felon, making it nearly impossible to hold down a decent job. With his future looking bleak, he begins to imagine a path outside the law.
A felon's new outlook
With few prospects, Wisdom resolves to become a criminal 'for the people', inspired by a Robin Hood fantasy. He shifts from self-destruction toward a cause he believes could empower him. The plan remains vague, but the mood is clear: act outside the law for a perceived greater good.
Motivation from debt-stricken farmers
News reports about impoverished farmers and working-class people losing their land spark Wisdom's sense of purpose. He reinterprets crime as a tool to help those trapped by debt rather than to enrich himself. This belief becomes the motive behind his upcoming actions.
First bank robbery with Karen
Wisdom launches a bank robbing spree with his girlfriend Karen Simmons. They initially plan to operate alone, but Karen insists on joining the first job as his accomplice. Their targets become about erasing loan and mortgage records rather than taking cash.
Karen becomes a partner
Karen's insistence on joining the operation turns it into a shared mission. The two push forward with the idea of wiping debt records to help the struggling, rather than propping themselves up financially. Tension and loyalty test their collaboration as the spree continues.
Motel recognition and gifts
After an early success, a motel owner recognizes them. The locals come to thank the duo and bear gifts, including a new vehicle. The moment turns their notoriety into a small, uneasy celebration.
FBI pursuit and motel shootout
The FBI closes in on Wisdom and Karen, and agents raid the motel where they had stayed. The couple has already fled, but the pursuit intensifies as agents search for them. The motel raid marks a turning point in their manhunt.
Sheriff killed in convenience store
Back in a convenience store, Karen is recognized by a local sheriff who she panics and shoots. The killing escalates the danger and forces the couple to flee toward the Canada–United States border. The tone shifts from idealism to desperate flight.
Crossing toward the border; helicopter threat
Toward the border, they push ahead hoping to escape. A police helicopter roars in and shoots Karen, wounding her and altering the balance of the chase. Wisdom tries to salvage the situation by leaving Karen in the care of some high school students and their teacher.
Final pursuit on school grounds
Wisdom resumes his flight on foot across a school campus, unloading his gun as he moves. He is surrounded by police and federal agents on the football field, and, as he seems ready to reach for a weapon, he is riddled with gunfire and dies. The scene closes the hunt with a fatal conflation of fantasy and reality.

In a world where the promise of a fresh start often collides with the weight of past mistakes, the film opens on a restless, post‑college America that feels both ordinary and edged with hidden desperation. The atmosphere is a muted blend of late‑night neon and quiet suburban rooms, hinting at the social pressures that shape the choices of those standing on the brink of adulthood. A subtle, almost poetic tension runs through the streets, suggesting that ordinary lives are ready to be unsettled by the allure of something larger than themselves.
John Wisdom emerges as the film’s central figure—a newly graduated young man whose future has been abruptly rerouted by a criminal conviction that now casts a long shadow over any conventional path. Stripped of ordinary opportunities, he finds himself grappling with a lingering idealism that refuses to be silenced. His internal struggle is captured with a thoughtful, almost lyrical cadence, portraying a person who is simultaneously disillusioned with the system and driven by a deep‑seated desire to make a meaningful impact.
Enter Karen Simmons, whose presence adds both warmth and urgency to John’s restless quest. Their relationship is portrayed as a partnership forged from shared discontent and a mutual willingness to challenge the status quo. The chemistry between them is charged with a blend of affection and a tacit understanding that they are each other’s catalyst for change, setting the stage for a dynamic that feels both intimate and volatile.
As the pair contemplate stepping beyond the boundaries of legality, the film hints at a journey that will test their convictions, friendships, and the fragile line between rebellion and responsibility. The tone remains contemplative yet charged, inviting the audience to wonder how far one will go when the promise of ordinary life is eclipsed by a yearning to rewrite the rules for themselves and those they care about.
