Wired Shut 2021

Reed Rodney is a divorced writer who has recently had his jaw wired shut to recover from an accident, a physical constraint that makes his days feel more claustrophobic and his communication with the world awkward and strained. He is still trying to make progress on a new book, but the process is slow and frustrating, weighed down by memories of the past that he hasn’t managed to put to rest. His estranged daughter Emmy arrives with a heavy, volatile history between them. She doesn’t sugarcoat what their family has endured, and she bluntly accuses him of a string of affairs and of violently assaulting her mother, a brutal episode that helped drive their divorce and still colors every conversation they have.

One night, Emmy returns with her boyfriend Peyton, and the two quietly slip into the house with a plan to steal the money Reed keeps in a safe. The scheme hinges on drugging him so they can force the safe’s combination from him, but [Emmy] finds herself unable to push him to take the medication, revealing how fragile their plan is and how deeply unresolved the family’s hurt runs. As the intruders move through the house, Emmy stumbles upon an unfinished letter Reed has written to her, a private confession in which he laments the tumultuous childhood she has endured and acknowledges the weight of the past they both carry.

Peyton, who hadn’t counted on using a gun, escalates the situation by restraining Reed and Emmy with cable ties as they press Reed for the safe’s code. Reed, faced with the threat, finally relents, a moment that exposes just how far fear and coercion have driven these people to the brink. Peyton reveals that his interest in Emmy was, in part, financial—an unsettling motive that darkens the already tense atmosphere. The trio’s plan derails as Peyton escorts Emmy upstairs in an attempt to open the safe, but Reed manages to break free, retrieve a handgun from a separate safe, and reassert control over the dangerous situation that has spiraled out of his grasp.

The confrontation crescendos in violence: Reed fires at Peyton, and although the bullet doesn’t immediately end the danger, the two of them retreat to the basement where the danger continues to intensify. Peyton, badly wounded, overpowers Reed and declares his intention to kill Emmy right in front of him, a chilling threat that pushes Reed to the edge. In the heat of the moment, Reed shouts with a broken jaw to punctuate his defiance, while Peyton mocks him—until Emmy acts. She seizes a cable tie and wraps it around Peyton’s throat, suffocating him as Reed’s broken voice and the muffled sounds of struggle hang in the air.

The morning after reveals a shift in their relationship, as Emmy admits she has found the letter but cannot bring herself to forgive Reed. Yet she is open to trying to build something new, a tentative glimmer of reconciliation that neither of them has fully earned yet. In a final gesture, Reed offers Emmy the manuscript of his novella, complete with a dedication that explains his belief that words alone cannot erase the past, but that the present and the choices they make now might forge a better path forward. Emmy weeps, touched and overwhelmed by the unexpected possibility of healing, and the film closes on a quiet, hopeful moment that suggests perhaps a fragile, reluctant pivot toward a future that could be different from their history.
