Vasilisa, Svetlana Khodchenkova, is a serf bound to a small, hard village world who keeps a secret romance with the nobleman Ivan Ryazanov, Aleksey Barabash. He promises her freedom and a wedding, but his life is tangled in an old arrangement: since childhood he has been betrothed to another noblewoman, and that bond remains even as a friendship with his intended bride lingers. Persuaded by her sister that Ryazanov is likely to wed his fiancée, Vasilisa faces a painful choice. As Napoléon Bonaparte’s armies advance into Russia and the Patriotic War unfolds, the balance of life changes in an instant.
