Cesare, Alberto Sordi a Roman soldier, travels to Alexandria to join the army staff of Cleopatra. Cleopatra Sophia Loren is renowned for her charm and is the wife of Emperor Mark Antony Ettore Manni, but when he is away she sometimes spends the night with one of his soldiers, only to have them killed the next day by poison.

When Antony returns to lead the fight, Cleopatra visits him secretly while Nisca Sophia Loren—a blonde look-alike who can pass for Cleopatra—takes her place at the palace. Cesare, unaware of the switch, spends the night with the doppelgänger, who proves to be fragile and sad.

The following night Cesare is arrested on suspicion of harming Cleopatra, though his only intention was to greet her. Intrigued by a ring identical to Cleopatra’s, Cleopatra frees him and warns that he will die the next day. Cesare, determined to resist manipulation, becomes drunk and frees Nisca, who is imprisoned. The story ends with Cesare and Nisca fleeing from Alexandria, trying to outrun a web of deception and danger.
