Fast-forward to the present, where Lauren [Miranda Tapsell] is a lawyer in Adelaide who has just earned a well-deserved promotion. Her fiancé Ned [Gwilym Lee] proposes a quick wedding, but he has quietly quit his own job as a lawyer, a detail that foreshadows the uncertainties behind a rushed ceremony. Lauren’s workaholic boss, Ms. Hampton [Kerry Fox], grants her 10 days off for the wedding and honeymoon, a generous but practical deadline that nudges them to plan the ceremony in Lauren’s hometown of Darwin.

Upon arriving in Darwin, Lauren learns that her mother has abandoned her father, Trevor Ford [Huw Higginson], and is nowhere to be found. This revelation deepens the sense that a wedding cannot proceed without the presence of family, and Lauren decides that she cannot marry without her mother there.
