What Is They About?

The premise of They in 303 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In a world where ordinary days bleed into uneasy nights, the story follows Julia Lund, a psychology graduate who has long tried to put childhood terrors behind her. When a chance reunion with her old friend Billy Parks pulls her back toward the shadows of their shared past, Julia finds herself once again standing at the edge of a darkness that refuses to stay hidden. The atmosphere is thick with a quiet dread, the familiar streets and dimly lit rooms feeling simultaneously safe and subtly threatening, setting the stage for a thriller that is as much about the mind as it is about the unseen forces that stir within it.

Both Julia and Billy are haunted not only by lingering nightmares but also by the pressure to conform to expectations that clash with their innermost sense of self. Themes of gender fluidity and self‑discovery weave through their interactions, as they grapple with the question of whether to reveal their true identities or surrender to the comfort of societal norms. A small circle of friends—each carrying their own scars—adds layers of camaraderie and tension, hinting at a collective unease that is both personal and collective. The narrative suggests that the night’s oppressive silence may be more than metaphor, hinting at an enigmatic presence that thrives where light falters.

Stylistically, the film balances stark, almost clinical realism with moments of unsettling surrealism, using flickering lights, echoing corridors, and fleeting glimpses of the uncanny to keep viewers on edge. The tension is amplified by an ever‑present sense of being watched, prompting Julia to question what is real and what is imagined. As she navigates the thin line between acceptance and denial, the story invites the audience to feel the pull of hidden truths and the courage required to step into the light of one’s authentic self.

Spoilers ahead

In 1983, a boy named Billy Parks has difficulty falling asleep after waking up from a nightmare. His mother, Mary, assures him that the monster he thinks is in the closet is imaginary. As he tries to fall asleep, a dark apparition emerges from his closet and spirits him away.

In 2002, psychology grad student Julia Lund, Laura Regan, reunites with her childhood friend, a grown Billy. Julia experienced night terrors as a child after witnessing her father commit suicide, but has seemingly overcome the problem. Billy, startled by flickering lights in a diner and deathly afraid of the dark, tells her that he believes their night terrors are caused by something otherworldly. As a child, he was kidnapped by mysterious creatures and went missing for two days. He warns her to stay out of the dark, then shoots himself.

Julia Lund, Laura Regan, stays over at her boyfriend Paul, Marc Blucas, apartment to grieve. That night, Julia hears the shower running and investigates. She finds a black fluid erupting from the sink drain, and the bathroom mirror opens to an alternate dimension filled with mysterious creatures. Paul, hearing her screams, finds her alone. He suggests she might have been sleepwalking, since she does not remember what happened.

At Billy’s funeral, Julia meets two of his friends and roommates, Terry and Sam, who also had night terrors as children and have begun to believe his claims. Julia visits Billy’s childhood room and discovers a drawer full of batteries. Later, as Julia drives, a creature sprints across the windshield, and the SUV’s engine stops. As Julia attempts to restart it, she is startled by a vision of Billy and is nearly hit by a truck.

At Terry and Sam’s apartment, the trio studies Billy’s diary. Terry and Sam ask Julia if she has experienced a return of the night terrors, which she denies. Terry says her night terrors started after she witnessed her sister drown in a lake. In one instance, she disappeared from her bedroom and returned in the dog house; when her father reached in for her, she stabbed him in the eye with a kitchen knife, convinced he was a demon. Julia meets a girl named Sarah, one of Dr. Booth’s patients, who claims that “They” will eat her in her nightmares and that the only thing that keeps them away is light. She starts picking at a strange mark on her arm; a similar mark had also appeared on Billy’s hand, Sam’s shoulder, and Terry’s ankle. The creatures soon take Terry and Sam.

Julia discovers the mark on her forehead and pulls out a long black needle. She runs to Paul’s. Paul, convinced that she is insane, drugs her with a sleeping pill and calls Dr. Booth. Julia runs to the subway and becomes trapped in the station. She boards a train home and is the only passenger. The lights flicker, and the train stops. She gets off and sees all the light bulbs burst in the tunnel. The creatures attack her, but Julia manages to escape. When a group of tunnel workers attempt to help her, Julia assaults them with shards of glass, convinced they are inhuman.

Julia is committed to Dr. Booth’s mental institution, where she is attacked and transported into the dimension she saw, this time inside a closet. She screams for help from Dr. Booth and an orderly, but neither can see nor hear her. Dr. Booth closes the door, and the creatures drag Julia away.

Setting

Where and When Is They Set?

They is set in Billy's childhood home, Billy's childhood room, diner, Julia's apartment… (1983, 2002). Here is why the time and place matter to the story.

When

1983, 2002

In 1983, Billy Parks experiences a terrifying abduction that fuses childhood fear with a lingering threat. By 2002, Julia Lund—a psychology graduate student—confronts the same phenomena while coping with her own past trauma. The narrative toggles between these two periods to connect childhood events with present danger and to show how past horrors echo into adulthood. The setting shift emphasizes a long-standing, pervasive horror rather than a single moment of fear.

Billy's childhood home, Billy's childhood room, diner, Julia's apartment, Paul's apartment, Terry and Sam's apartment, subway station, Dr. Booth's mental institution

The film unfolds across a mix of everyday settings that become scenes of menace. It begins in a quiet suburban home and a child's bedroom, then moves through public spaces like a diner and a subway, before entering a psychiatric institution. Dark closets and dim corridors transform familiar rooms into gateways for the otherworldly creatures. The interplay between ordinary locations and horror heightens the sense that danger can hide in plain sight.

Themes

What Are the Themes of They?

3 ideas the story keeps returning to, among them Nightmares vs Reality, Light vs Darkness and Trauma and Memory.

  1. 01

    Nightmares vs Reality

Nightmares in They bleed into waking life, forcing the characters to question what is real. The incidents stretch across two decades, tying childhood abductions to contemporary danger. The film uses claustrophobic spaces—closets, dim hallways, and enclosed transit—to make fear feel tangible rather than imagined. By blurring dream and reality, the story suggests that some horrors survive outside sleep and awaken to threaten the present.

  2. 02

    Light vs Darkness

Light functions as a shield and a lifeline against the unseen threat. The creatures are repelled by light, turning darkness into a trap for the vulnerable. The reliance on illumination creates a clear moral and physical battleground where truth, safety, and survival depend on visibility. Light sources—lamps, windows, and streetlights—mark the boundary between safety and danger and guide the characters toward answers.

  3. 03

    Trauma and Memory

It explores how childhood trauma echoes into adulthood, shaping fears and coping strategies. The night terrors are more than dreams; they are memory fragments of real events—abduction, family tragedy, and guilt—that resurface under stress. Denial and secrecy distort perception, making it hard to distinguish threat from imagination. Pursuing the truth risks reopening old wounds but may be necessary to stop the danger from returning.
