Although the plan is to head south to Odessa, circumstances push the journey north instead, and he finds himself on a train toward what becomes a pivotal halt in Slutsk, Belarus.

Weeks pass, and a Russian marshal, Semyon Timoshenko, arrives at the displaced persons camp and announces that they may return home. The journey continues by train, moving south and then west through Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany.
