The book opens with the departure of the Germans from the camp, leaving the sick inmates behind as healthier prisoners are marched away on a death march toward the advancing Red Army. With every service evacuated, desperate explorations begin in search of food and other essentials to keep people alive.

When the Red Army arrives, they are confronted by the dire condition of the camp’s inhabitants and, in response, provide basic medical aid. The remaining inmates are then transported to a hospital within the main camp, where a pause in the chaos allows the protagonist to regain some strength.

From that renewed moment of health, the protagonist sets out on a long journey that first carries him to Kraków, then to Katowice, where he stays for a time and works as a pharmaceutical assistant. The trek continues eastward through weeks of travel to Tarnów, Rzeszów, and Przemyśl, before crossing into Ukraine and moving through Lviv, Ternopil, Proskurov, and Zhmerynka. Although the plan is to head south to Odessa, circumstances push the journey north instead, and he finds himself on a train toward what becomes a pivotal halt in Slutsk, Belarus.

From Slutsk, he walks and rides in a horse cart to Starye Dorogi, where he makes his home in the Krasny Dom—known as the “Red House”—and works again as a medical assistant. Weeks pass, and a Russian marshal, Semyon Timoshenko, arrives at the displaced persons camp and announces that they may return home. The journey continues by train, moving south and then west through Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany.

After 35 days of travel since leaving Krasny Dom, the protagonist finally arrives back in his hometown of Turin, which he last saw about twenty months earlier. The narrative follows a long, arduous route filled with hardship, small rescues, and moments of relief, painting a vivid portrait of endurance, resilience, and the slow return to a recognizable life.
