Eventually, however, Buscetta was captured and tortured by Brazilian authorities. Confronted with the certainty of death upon his extradition back to Italy, he received an unexpected offer from Judge Giovanni Falcone, played by Fausto Russo Alesi. Falcone proposed that in exchange for his cooperation with the police and judicial system, Buscetta would receive state protection.
