The Sacketts 1979

Three brothers from Tennessee, the sons of Welsh immigrants, Tell Sackett, [Tom Selleck], Orrin Sackett, [Pat Buttram], and Tyrel Sackett, [Jeff Osterhage], are brought together by a series of tragic events that unfold during Orrin’s wedding. Each brother has a distinct background and personality that shapes their actions and decisions throughout their adventures in the Old West.

Tell, a rugged mountain man portrayed by [Sam Elliott], has been estranged from his family for nearly a decade. He’s a hard, solitary figure who has carved out a life in the wilderness, often relying on his skills as a gunfighter. During the wedding, chaos erupts when Long Higgins, a dangerous brother of a man Orrin previously killed, arrives unexpectedly. Long is determined to exact revenge and arrives carrying a gun, but in the heat of the moment, he attempts to shoot Orrin, only for Orrin’s fiancée to get in the way, resulting in her death. In retaliation, Tyrel quickly acts and kills Long, which sets off a chain of events that propels the brothers into a life of adventure and conflict.

Following the funeral, Orrin’s mother advises him to reunite with Tyrel and find Tell, urging them to start anew in the West where opportunities and dangers alike await. Meanwhile, Tell has found work in a Texas mining camp in Uvalde, but his temper and quick draw lead to trouble. During a card game, he accuses a fellow miner, Wes Bigelow, of cheating, and when challenged, he shoots and kills him. Recognizing the threat posed by Wes Bigelow’s angry brothers, the camp’s leader suggests Tell leave the area quickly to avoid revenge, prompting him to head into the wild.

Tyrel joins a cattle drive to the West after parting from his brother. On the drive, he quickly establishes meaningful friendships with seasoned cowhand [Ben Johnson] as Cap Rountree, and the veteran gunfighter [Glenn Ford] as Tom Sunday, who becomes a mentor to him. Their steady journey concludes in Abilene, Kansas, where they plan to gather wild cattle near the Purgatoire River and head toward Santa Fe. On this journey, Orrin, Tyrel, and Sunday develop romantic interests—Orrin is drawn to the daughter of wealthy landowner [Jonathan Pritts], and Tyrel becomes enamored with Dona Drusilla, the granddaughter of the influential and wealthy Mexican Don Luis, portrayed by [Gilbert Roland]. Tensions arise as Pritts and Don Luis argue over land disputes in Santa Fe, setting the stage for future conflicts.

As they reunite with Tell at Purgatorie, in Colorado, plans are made to search for gold in the mountains, while their ties to local land disputes and personal affections deepen. During this time, Tell and Cap encounter a young, talented gunfighter named Kid Newton, who threatens to interfere during their confrontation, but Tell manages to diffuse the situation with his calm and commanding presence.

As their travels progress, Orrin and Sunday find themselves competing for the position of town sheriff. Pritts, aware of Sunday’s controversial past as a disbarred lawyer and ex-convict, secretly helps Orrin secure the office by exposing Sunday’s background. This humiliates Sunday, leading to heavy drinking and increasing hostility towards Orrin. The tension culminates when Sunday, now resentful, slaps Orrin after an argument. Orrin then offers Sunday the deputy sheriff position, but the ex-lawman, feeling betrayed and defeated, refuses and leaves the town in anger.

Tragedy strikes with Don Luis’s death and further reveals the corruption within the town politics. Orrin and Tyrel work tirelessly to expose the real villains—Pritts and his men—who had ordered violent acts against rivals and others. This effort leads to Pritts’s arrest by the territorial marshal. Amid these turbulent events, Orrin plans to run for mayor, signaling his commitment to justice and leadership in the town.

Meanwhile, the brothers face setbacks and personal conflicts. Orrin’s and Tyrel’s bond is tested when Sunday seeks a final showdown, and Tyrel, unwilling to allow violence, shoots first in a tense duel, resulting in Sunday’s death. Tyrel is overwhelmed with grief as he cradles his fallen adversary, mourning the brother he had once looked up to.

While trapped in caves with Cap after a confrontation that leaves Cap wounded, Ange Kerry, a woman they encounter during a gold prospecting trip, manages to escape on a stolen horse and sends an urgent wire to Orrin. Tell, Cap, and the others then plan a retaliatory strike against the Bigelow brothers, notorious outlaws hunting Tell for past deeds. The Bigelow gang, including [Gene Evans] as Benson Bigelow, sets up a deadly confrontation in Purgatorie.

As the showdown approaches, Tell, feeling the weight of his past but determined to face his enemies, marches alone into the streets at dawn. With the help of Cap and the marching brothers, the Sackett family engages in a fierce gunfight against the seven Bigelow gang members. Overcoming the odds, they manage to kill the entire gang, reaffirming their bond and resolve. The film concludes with the brothers walking away together, united and steady in their purpose, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead in the rugged and unforgiving West.
