The Rebel 2007

Set in 1922, in the tense atmosphere of French Indochina, the film follows Le Van Cuong Johnny Nguyen, a skilled Vietnamese secret agent who works for a covert unit tasked with hunting down rebellious activity across the country. Despite his flawless track record, a growing burden of guilt gnaws at him for the bloodshed he has caused in the line of duty. When a high-ranking French official is assassinated, Cuong is ordered to close in on the ruthless leader of the resistance, a mission that will push him to the moral edge.

Cuong’s path intersects with Vo Thanh Thuy Veronica Ngo, a fierce and tireless revolutionary fighter who fights for her people and the cause her father once led. Thuy is captured and imprisoned by Cuong’s cruel superior, Sy Dustin Nguyen. Cuong becomes increasingly suspicious that Sy anticipated the attack on the official and might have betrayed the operation. He plays a dangerous game of double-cross, warning Thuy that the resistance has a mole and secretly helping her escape from the prison, thus becoming a fugitive himself. The spark between them grows into a conflicted attraction: Thuy’s passion for freedom ignites a new tenderness in Cuong, and he finds himself drawn to her resolve even as he fights the pull of his own loyalty.

Together they head toward the heart of the rebellion, with Sy relentlessly pursuing them and Hua Danh Thang Nguyen in tow. The couple’s flight culminates in a night raid where French soldiers attack, and Cuong and Thuy manage to repel the assault. In the aftermath, they cross paths with Sy and Hua Danh. Cuong resists, but a brutal confrontation leaves him wounded after a brutal fight with Hua Danh. During a quiet moment of care, Thuy opens up about a far older wound in her family history: her mother’s suicide after a brutal assault by a French soldier, a tragedy that shadows Thuy’sfather’s memory and the movement they fight for.

The lovers’ bond deepens, and they share a moment of closeness that temporarily tempers the violence surrounding them. Yet the danger intensifies as Sy closes in on Cuong’s family. He tracks Cuong down and ferociously torments Cuong’s father, leaving him grievously injured. In a grim confrontation, Sy gouges Cuong’s father’s eye, a brutal act that hardens Cuong and steels his resolve to protect those he cares about. When Cuong and Thuy learn that the rebels’ hideout might be exposed, Thuy admits she lied about a train plan to lure him into a trap, and she guides him to her father’s concealed base instead.

Thuy’s brother grows suspicious of Cuong, yet the elder Thuy’s father accepts him, recognizing the potential in Cuong to change the course of their struggle. The situation spirals into chaos when the French discover the two outsiders and the hideout is ambushed. Sy captures Thuy’s father and exposes Cuong as a traitor, signaling a fatal blow to the rebel network. In a desperate bid to save the others, Cuong volunteers to stand before a firing squad, asking to be blindfold-free so he can face death with clear eyes. Instead, a hidden knife frees the captured rebels, and Cuong leads a fierce, improvised assault to break the siege.

Cuong and Thuy press their advantage, fighting side by side as they race toward a railway line, determined to outmaneuver their pursuers. In a final, brutal showdown, Cuong faces Sy and, with Thuy by his side, they manage to kill him—Cuong stabbing Sy in the eye and ending his menace. With Sy dead, they secure Thuy’s father and return to the village where the darkest losses have taken their toll. The landscape bears scars, but the couple—along with the surviving rebels, including a little girl who embodies the future they fight for—pay their respects to the fallen. In a quiet, hopeful gesture, Cuong and Thuy scatter the ashes of their fallen comrades into the rivers of Vietnam, a ceremonial farewell that honors the lives lost and lays the ground for a possible, fragile peace.
