What Is The Desperados About?

The premise of The Desperados in 270 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In the chaotic aftermath of the American Civil War, the frontier serves as a stark reminder that peace is not easily won. Parson Josiah Galt, a ruthless preacher turned marauder, leads his sons through the ravaged landscapes of Texas, twisting religious zeal into a justification for violence. Under his command, the family operates with terrifying efficiency, looting and raiding communities that are struggling to rebuild. For the Galts, the war may have officially ended, but the bloodshed continues, fueled by a patriarch whose piety has curdled into a vengeful obsession.

Within this tight-knit and dangerous circle, a profound fracture begins to form. While his brothers, Adam and Jacob, follow their father’s brutal path without question, David Galt finds himself increasingly at odds with the savagery that defines their existence. His conscience stands in sharp contrast to the merciless code of the gang, creating an unbearable tension that threatens to tear the family apart. As the group tightens its grip on the region, David faces an impossible choice between the loyalty he owes his bloodline and the morality he feels compelled to uphold.

The arrival of the marauders brings the region to a breaking point, forcing the local populace and the law to confront a threat that feels more like a force of nature than a criminal gang. As the narrative unfolds, the inevitable collision between the family’s dark legacy and the desire for a different life looms large. The story promises a gritty exploration of vengeance and the high cost of defiance in a lawless land, where the bonds of kinship are tested against the weight of a violent past.

Spoilers ahead

Parson Josiah Galt, Jack Palance, is a ruthless preacher who leads a brutal band of Southern marauders during the Civil War. His piety has curdled into a vengeful, sadistic zeal after the death of his wife, Emily Galt, Sheila Burrell. The group includes his ambitious sons—David Galt, Vince Edwards; Adam Galt, Christian Roberts; and Jacob Galt, George Maharis—and together they ride the countryside, raiding towns, looting, and leaving fear in their wake as the war rages on.

David can no longer stomach the brutality his family brings down on innocent communities. When his brother Adam attempts to rape a girl in a Kansas town they have just raided, David tries to walk away from the path of violence. He is captured, accused of ‘treason’ by his own father, and sentenced to hang.

Escaping the noose, David returns to his wife Laura and their young son Pauly and heads to Texas under a false name. For six years they live a quiet, fragile peace, even as the war ends and the nation breathes a sigh of relief.

Yet the Galts reappear in Texas, continuing robberies and killings. A conscience-stricken David goes to Sheriff Kirkpatrick, Neville Brand, and reveals who they are and who he has become. In a confrontation, David kills his brother Adam.

Parson Galt and Jacob take Laura and Pauly captive, and in the process they murder David’s wife. To win back his son, David spies a train robbery his father has planned, thwarts the plan, and kills Jacob.

In a final, brutal showdown, Josiah and David clash and both meet their deaths.
