The Thundering Mantis 1980

Ah Chi, Bryan Leung, is a martial artist who often gets into trouble while goofing around, even as he genuinely wants to defend his neighborhood. His playful swagger hides a willingness to stand up for people in need, and his quick reflexes on the street sometimes backfire, pulling him into clashes he didn’t intend to start.

One day, he meets a crafty kid, Wong Yat-Lung, and learns that the youngster’s uncle is the feared master of the thundering mantis-style. Curiosity pulls Ah Chi toward this formidable figure, and he boldly challenges the mantis master, only to be decisively defeated without much effort. The encounter impresses and humiliates him in equal measure, underscoring a gap between his brash confidence and true mastery.

Shortly after, Ah Chi faces the Jade Horse Gang, a group that he manages to beat in a display of flashy skill. Yet right after this small victory, the real confrontation looms: Hsia, [Eddy Ko Hung], the master of the gang, steps forward. The duel is brutal and unequal, and Hsia delivers a humbling, public defeat that leaves Ah Chi reeling—an echo of the earlier loss to the mantis master. Humiliation burns away any remaining bravado, and the sting of that second loss pushes him toward a desperate search for guidance and resolve.

Driven by desperation, Ah Chi rushes to reconnect with the kid he befriended and with the uncle who trained them in the mantis style. After completing his training, Ah Chi and the kid wander again, sharpened and more focused than before, though the looming threat of Hsia and the Jade gang never truly leaves them.

The uncle, surprised by an imminent confrontation, faces Hsia in a duel.
