The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea 2000

Two years after the events of the first film, Ariel Jodi Benson and Eric Rob Paulsen welcome a daughter named Melody Tara Strong, the first human-mermaid hybrid, a living bridge between two worlds. A flying fish spreads the word to Flounder Cam Clarke, Sebastian Samuel E. Wright, and the rest of the ocean community that Ariel and Melody are coming, setting the stage for a family watched over by the bright, watchful eyes of the sea.

At Melody’s christening, King Triton Kenneth Mars presents his granddaughter with a magic locket bearing her name, a token meant to remind her that a piece of her future will always belong to the ocean. Yet peace is fragile. Morgana [Pat Carroll], Ursula’s younger sister, arrives with a chilling demand: if Triton does not hand over his trident, Melody will be fed to Undertow [Clancy Brown], Morgana’s tiger shark ally. The threat shakes the royal depths, and Ariel and Eric race to thwart Morgana’s plan. In a decisive move, Triton transforms Undertow into a piranha, though the fearsome creature keeps his distinctive stripes and large dorsal fin, a reminder of the old threat that lingers beneath the waves. Morgana escapes the net of Triton’s forces, vowing that she will one day exact revenge on both Ariel and Triton and avenge Ursula’s death.

To keep Melody safe, Ariel decides to withhold full knowledge of Melody’s mermaid heritage, even from her own daughter, until Morgana is captured. Triton seals off the sea and the castle with a solid barrier, tossing the locket into the ocean, and he assigns Sebastian to watch over Melody, a quiet guardian keeping a secret watch over a hidden world.

Twelve years pass, and Melody remains unaware of her mermaid roots. Forbidden from entering the sea, she still finds ways to slip away and swim, drawn by a pull she cannot name. One day she locates the locket and sees her own name engraved on it, prompting questions she asks her mother, who continues to uphold the wall between land and sea. Frustrated, Melody steals a small boat and sails beyond the shoreline, where Undertow finds her and leads her straight to Morgana.

Ariel and Eric learn of Melody’s disappearance through a frantic Sebastian, who pleads for help and urges them to search the open ocean. Meanwhile, Morgana reveals Melody’s marine lineage and uses the remnants of Ursula’s magic to transform Melody into a mermaid, a revelation that deepens the family’s fear and resolve. To locate Melody, Triton and Ariel debate using the trident to restore harmony and to help Melody discover where she truly belongs in the vast blue.

Melody’s journey takes a turn as she befriends Tip Max Casella and Dash Stephen Furst, a penguin and a walrus duo who join her on a bold quest. With the trident in her hands, Melody steps into a power that she had only felt in dreams, and she is torn between her mother’s warnings and her growing pull toward the sea she was born to call home. Ariel pleads with her not to hand the trident to Morgana, but the lure of belonging and power pulls Melody toward a choice she never anticipated.

Morgana, unmasked, reveals her true intentions and traps Melody in a cave, sealing the entrance with a thick layer of ice. The spell’s hold wears off, Melody reverts to a human form, and she nearly drowns, only to be rescued by Tip and Dash, who pull her back to shore. Morgana uses the trident’s magic to rule the ocean, rising to the surface to taunt her enemies, but help arrives in force: Scuttle [Buddy Hackett], Triton, Sebastian, and Eric converge for a final confrontation.

In the climactic struggle, Melody seizes the trident and hurls it back to Triton, who encases Morgana in ice and sinks her beneath the waves. Reunited with her family, Melody faces a choice about her future. Instead of remaining a permanent mermaid, she uses the trident to break down the barrier between sea and land, finally reuniting humans and merpeople and embracing a future where two worlds can share one ocean.

Throughout, the film blends wonder, danger, and tender moments as a royal family—Ariel, Eric, and their daughter Melody—navigate power, heritage, and belonging, guided by loyal friends and the ever-present pull of the sea.
