The Last Survivors 2014

Ten years after rain ceases to fall, Oregon has become a dry, sun-scorched wasteland where water is life and danger hides behind every ridge. In this harsh world, Kendal dedicates herself to caring for Dean, a fellow orphan whose kidneys are failing, while whispers of survival echo across battered farms and empty wells. Her friend Gabriel, who tends a nearby homestead, urges her to join his growing community, offering safety and a sense of belonging, but she refuses to abandon Dean. The fragile routine is shaken when a distress call crackles over the two-way radio, and Kendal ventures out to answer it. What she finds is a carefully laid trap: marauders slip from the shadows, slaughter the family that answered the call, and Kendal can only watch in horror as the attackers purge the house before she slips away in the darkness.

As wells run drier and drier, Dean voices a grim theory—warlord Carson has drilled into the aquifer and is siphoning water for his own gain. Carson runs a fortified compound that markets itself as a safe haven, and his promises lure desperate neighbors into submission. One such neighbor, Grace, reveals she has joined Carson after her well dries up and tries to coax Kendal to leave with her, hoping the offer of medicine for Dean might tip the balance. Kendal remains wary, and when Carson arrives, the tension erupts. Carson wastes no time, killing Gabriel’s entire family and declaring that only those who are infirm or utterly improvable will be sacrificed to save the rest; Gabriel, faced with impossible choices, reluctantly betrays a relative to stay alive. Kendal, horrified by the mercy that isn’t mercy at all, escapes by slipping away and taking advantage of a moment of distraction to take down a sentry.

Kendal shifts her focus to Alby, a lone boy who lives off the grid and avoids the ever-growing danger. She warns him of the plan to escape via a Cessna that has been painstakingly repaired, contingent on finding a distributor cap. Alby, wary of attracting Carson’s notice, asks her not to visit too often, but she persists, hoping to forge a path to safety for him as well. After obtaining the proper distributor cap from a car inside Carson’s compound, Kendal returns home, only to confront a new crisis: three wanderers arrive, seeking water. Dean insists that Kendal share what little they have, but their presence is a trap of another sort. The intruders are slain by Dean, who, though frail, wields desperation as a weapon.

Carson, drawn by the gunshots, advances on the property and confronts the carnage. Dean fights back, killing several of Carson’s men, even as Carson laments the limits of what he can save and the weight of the decisions he must make for the “greater good.” His lieutenant, a man in priest’s garb, provides a chilling counterpoint, urging the pursuit of a ruthless efficiency in their grim calculus. Kendal, now armed with a katana she recovered from a grave at Grace’s farm, returns to the house to root out the remaining threats. The result is a brutal confrontation that claims the lives of the men inside, including the masked figure who had been Gabriel, and a moment that places Kendal in sole command of her own fate.

With Carson’s compound breached, Kendal discovers that Alby has been abducted. She presses the attack, destroying the remaining guards and reclaiming her chance at escape. The showdown culminates with a direct clash between Kendal and Carson, ending with Kendal wielding the katana to kill Carson in a final act of defiance. Carson’s daughter, Brooke, nearly overpowers Kendal in a desperate struggle, but the resourceful survivor overpowers Brooke and delivers a fatal strike, severing the last thread of Carson’s hold on the region. Kendal and Alby, now briefly free to breathe, head for the awaiting Cessna. They insert the distributor cap and fire up the engine, a small beacon of escape amid the endless drought. As they lift off, Alby asks about Dean, and Kendal’s quiet reply makes the fate of the sick boy clear: he remains behind, keeping his place in the ruined world while Kendal and Alby chart a new course toward the uncertain horizon.
