In the shadow of postwar uncertainty, a taut crime thriller unfolds, centering on four men whose lives have stalled at the intersection of bad luck and poor choices. Mike, a former boxer sidelined by injury, faces destitution after a personal betrayal leaves him empty-handed. Joe, an American clerk recently unemployed, fights to hold together his marriage to his English wife against the strain of a meddling relative and an impending transatlantic move. Eddie, a deserter from the US Air Force, pursues a fading hope of reconciliation with his unfaithful wife. Each man is defined by a distinct lack of options, their desperation making them ripe for manipulation.
Into this vacuum steps Rave, a charming, amoral playboy and veteran who has thus far lived a life of ease financed by others. Seeing an opportunity where others see ruin, Rave acts as the catalyst, uniting these disparate men with a singular, dangerous purpose. He possesses inside knowledge of a lucrative consignment at a local post office and proposes a raid on a mail van. While the others seek redemption or simple survival, Rave’s motivations are driven by a reckless greed and a cynical view of the world, casting him as the unpredictable architect of their collective fate.
The tension rises as the plan moves from theory to reality, with Rave distributing revolvers to men who are essentially strangers to such violence. The promise of a fortune hangs in the air, a tempting solution to all their woes, yet the presence of loaded weapons suggests a complication that goes beyond a simple theft. As they prepare for a midnight rendezvous, the film captures the uneasy alliance between men who are essentially good at heart and the manipulative force that leads them astray. The atmosphere is charged with the certainty that their best-laid plans are walking a razor’s edge between salvation and disaster.
