Pig lives in a solitary windmill located on the outskirts of town, where it sits atop a towering wall that continually pushes away a dense, dark fog that perpetually encroaches from outside. Each day, Pig diligently winds the windmill, maintaining the mechanism just as his father did before him. This daily routine is critical in keeping the fog at bay and protecting the town below, though it also isolates Pig from the rest of the community.

Despite his efforts to safeguard the town, Pig faces social rejection within the town and at school. The other animal children mock and bully him, making him feel isolated and misunderstood, even though he is doing what he believes is necessary to keep everyone safe. Life for Pig is filled with loneliness and a sense of being an outsider, which is compounded by how different he is from others around him.

The story introduces a new student at school named Fox, who quickly becomes popular due to her independent spirit and artistic talent. Later that evening, as the dark fog begins to roll in again, Pig—wearing his gas mask—waits for the fog to surround him, while the other animals run in terror to escape it.

In a moment of realization, Pig notices that the caricature of himself is paired with a drawing of Fox and titled “Dirty Pals.” This discovery jolts him back to the importance of friendship and the dangers of misunderstanding. Determined to rectify his mistake, Pig rushes to the windmill to confront the looming threat of the fog, risking his own safety to save the town. During this act of bravery, he damages one of the windmill’s propellers, but successfully disperses the fog.

As the fog clears and the town begins to recover, Pig observes the residents cleaning up and reflecting on his actions. He recalls the damaging caricature, realizing that Fox was trying to show that they were “dirty pals” rather than enemies. When he finally opens the windmill door, Fox is there waiting, and Pig apologizes for his misunderstanding. She forgives him, and the two of them share a moment of reconciliation.
