The Book of Masters 2009

A beautiful and kind girl, Katia, Mariya Andreeva daughter of Baba Yaga, finds a magical stone, Alatyr, in a field. The moment it touches her heart, a cruel curse takes hold: her heart turns to stone and she is condemned to become the evil Countess of Stones, living in a foreboding stone tower. The only way to reverse the curse and crown her ruler of the world is if the world’s greatest gem-cutter can bring Alatyr to life.

The Stone Countess, now cold and calculating, becomes obsessed with powering the stone and seizing control. She hunts for the finest gem-cutters and forces them to work with Alatyr, trying to coax life from the unyielding gem. When their efforts fail, she does not hesitate to kill them. While imprisoned in her tower, the doomed gem-cutters labor on a massive tome about the secrets of gem-cutting, each editor leaving a mark on what will be known as the Book of Masters. Alongside this, she crafts a talking magic mirror, a creature she treats more as a tool than a companion, and commands a fearsome army of stone soldiers—the Ardars—to terrorize the people and hollow out any hope of rebellion. Baba Yaga herself is drawn into this dark maze, becoming a source of sustenance for the Ardars as she sits at the center of a terrible cannibal mythology.

Into this peril steps Ivan, a young orphan with a village life that is ordinary on the surface but filled with ambition. He dreams of becoming the world’s finest gem-cutter, a dream grounded in a painful past: his father was kidnapped by the Stone Countess. Ivan’s path intersects with danger when he crafts a crude sculpture of his landlord’s daughter, Clava, exposing her flaws in a grotesque exaggeration. The landlord, who adores his daughter, is outraged and orders Ivan’s punishment, yet before the punishment can begin the Ardars descend upon the village, seizing Ivan and Clava and dragging them to Baba Yaga’s dwelling. Baba Yaga feeds the Ardars to sustain her power, and the two youths are momentarily saved when a gentle young girl calls herself Katia, the Stone Countess’s daughter, intervenes. Clava uses the distraction to flee Baba Yaga’s house, while Ivan remains in Baba Yaga’s clutches, guarded by the strange forces at play.

Katia helps Ivan escape through a hidden conduit to the stone tower. She reveals to Ivan a route that can be entered only through a well, if the Stone Countess herself permits it. Ivan confesses his longing to become a professional gem-cutter and to avenge his father’s disappearance, and Katia gives him the Book of Masters to study, while warning him of her mother’s dark power.

For a year, Ivan hides away with the book, growing attached to Katia even as he dedicates himself to study. Clava, the landlady’s daughter, remains eager to claim him as her rescuer, while the Countess pressures Katia to wed Yangul, the Ardars’ formidable commander who truly loves the girl. Ivan also has a rival in Kuzma, a blacksmith who adores him and supports Clava’s schemes.

When Ivan finally completes the study and sets out toward the stone tower, the Countess promises Katia’s hand in exchange for reviving Alatyr by giving it life. Ivan carves the stone into a perfect red rose, and it unfurls into life—yet the Countess has deceived him. In a dream, Katia tells him they will never be together, and fury drives Ivan to seek help from Baba Yaga. The Ardars pursue him, but Kuzma distracts them and pays with his life, slain by the Ardars.

Driven onward, Ivan meets a talking horse, frees a captured mermaid, and helps a bored bogatyr on his way. His quest leads him to Baba Yaga’s house, where she reveals the existence of magical diamonds that can cancel Alatyr’s dark power. She also gives him a bottle of the water of life, reviving Kuzma in the process. With Baba Yaga’s help, Ivan travels to Koschei the Deathless—a fearsome figure who owns the diamonds. Koschei initially resists, but is won over by the mermaid Katia rescued earlier, who becomes his fiancée. With the diamonds secure, Ivan hurries back to the tower.

Back at the tower, Katia’s soul is being poured into Alatyr to make the stone fully alive. Ivan saves Katia and steals Alatyr just in time, and the pair rush toward the passageway to the non-magical world. They are intercepted by Yangul, who still hopes to claim Katia for himself. To save Ivan, Katia offers herself; Yangul spares them and lets them escape, but the Stone Countess retaliates by turning Yangul to stone when she learns of his schemes.

The Countess finally confronts Ivan, demanding Alatyr back. No longer afraid, Ivan adorns Alatyr with the diamonds, breaking the curse and restoring the Countess to her true, kind self. She releases Katia to marry Ivan, and Clava—still yearning for a union—faces a different fate as her father agrees to marry her off to anyone who will take her, allowing Cusma to declare his love for Clava.

In the end, two couples are united and live happily ever after: Katia and Ivan, Clava and Cusma, as their respective villages begin to heal from the Countess’s reign of stone. The tale closes on a note of reconciliation and newfound hope, a world where magic and memory intertwine to reforge a future free from fear.
