Liya Mejidovna Akhedzhakova is a celebrated Soviet‑Russian actress whose career has spanned more than six decades, making her one of the most recognizable faces of Russian cinema and theatre. Born on 9 July 1938 in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukrainian SSR, she grew up in a theatrical family in Maykop, where her step‑father Mejid Salehovich Akhedzhakova, a Circassian nobleman, directed the National Theatre of Adygea, and her mother Yuliya Alexandrovna performed on stage. From an early age she demonstrated determination and resourcefulness, famously writing to Joseph Stalin at ten to obtain medical aid for her ailing relatives, an episode that foreshadowed her later willingness to confront authority. After a brief stint at the Moscow Institute of Non‑ferrous Metals and Gold, she entered the prestigious GITIS, graduating in 1962 and immediately appearing at the Moscow Youth Theatre. Her film debut came with “Ishchu cheloveka” (1973), earning international festival prizes and launching a prolific screen career.
