The Amityville Haunting 2011

In June 2008, the Benson family—Virginia Benson [Amy Van Horne], Douglas Benson [Jason Williams], Lori Benson [Nadine Crocker], and Tyler Benson [Devin Clark]—moves into 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, hoping a fresh start will help Lori cope with mounting teenage challenges. The house is infamous for a tragic past: in 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six members of his family there, a dark legacy that lingers over the property and ties the location to lingering whispers of the supernatural. Ronald DeFeo Jr. Luke Barnett is referenced as the ghostly figure tied to the home, a reminder of the estate’s history that unsettles the family from the outset.

Almost immediately, trouble surfaces in unsettling ways. Their realtor Camilla Weldon is found dead in the driveway, casting a pall over the new home and foreshadowing the danger that seems to seep from the walls. The next day, Steve, one of the movers, tumbles down the stairs and dies in a shocking accident that feels more sinister than mere misfortune. The Benson family, though shaken, chooses to stay, hoping rational explanations might suffice, but the house continues to gnaw at their sense of security. Doors open on their own, a kitchen counter accumulates a mysterious phone, and Tyler becomes a constant target of inexplicable disturbances, all of which erode the parents’ belief that logic can explain every occurrence.

Douglas, unable to ignore the mounting evidence, installs CCTV cameras to document what is happening inside the house. The presence of a spectral history begins to intersect with the family’s daily life as Melanie Benson Gracie Largent—the youngest daughter—begins to talk to an “imaginary friend” named John Matthew. This strange behavior draws the father’s suspicion, as he wonders whether Lori or Tyler might have unintentionally spilled the house’s secret to Melanie, feeding the illusion that something malevolent is at play. The tension within the family grows as the line between rational explanations and supernatural fear blurs.

As the hauntings intensify, a neighbor boy named Greg Tyler Shamy becomes entangled in the escalating fear, drawn to Lori as the family’s unease translates into social stress. The atmosphere tightens, and the sense of a malevolent force dwelling in the home becomes harder to ignore. A close family friend, referred to as Cut, also seems to be pulled into the dangers surrounding the house, heightening the sense that the hauntings extend beyond the Benson family alone and into their wider circle.

After one month of residence, tragedy strikes in a brutal sequence of deaths: Lori, Virginia, Douglas, and Tyler die in various, disturbing ways. Melanie survives, the last one left standing in a house that seems determined to claim the family it housed. The film closes with an autopsy detail that underscores the horror of the losses: each victim died under extreme stress, a chilling reminder that the house’s influence extended beyond mere fright to the very limits of human endurance.

In the aftermath, Melanie remains convinced that she will stay with John Matthew, insisting that the house and its history will never let her go.
