Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam 2010

The film opens with a young couple overlooking the city from a hillside as a meteor streaks across the sky, crashing into their car on the lookout above Fawcett City. It’s revealed that the meteor is in fact Black Adam returning to Earth from a long exile, setting the stage for a collision between ancient magic and modern life.

We then follow Billy Batson, Zach Callison a resourceful but hungry boy living in a rundown slum, as he wakes under a roof that doesn’t always feel like home and steps into a world where luck and grit are all that stand between him and the rats that share his space. He starts his day with a fan-t-shirt bearing the Superman crest, a small, bright detail in a life that doesn’t always offer such bright moments. On his way to rendezvous with Clark Kent, George Newbern in a nearby diner, Billy witnesses three bullies robbing a homeless man. When Billy tries to defend him, he earns a black eye, yet the grateful homeless man thanks him and calls him “The Captain,” a name that will echo through Billy’s future.

At the diner, Clark Kent buys him three breakfast specials and speaks of a story that could shine a light on the plight of kids like Billy, hinting at a brighter future if someone speaks up for them. Billy devours the meal with a eating pace that betrays his hunger, and he shares that he always tries to do the right thing, even when the odds are against him. In the midst of this quiet moment, a threat looms outside: Black Adam [Arnold Vosloo] has appeared, hovering and unleashing destruction by clapping his hands and tearing a hole in the diner. Clark protection falters as Adam blasts him through walls, and Billy bolts away into the chaos.

Superman [George Newbern] makes his entrance, attempting to hold off the magical onslaught, but Adam proves nearly unstoppable, noting with a cruel smile the Wizard’s choice to crown a new champion. Billy finds himself pursued through the streets, and Adam grabs a passing fire engine with the intention of turning it into a deadly weapon. Superman intervenes, halting the vehicle before it can be turned against them. The two clash as Billy watches in fear and awe, realizing that Adam’s powers are magically based and that magic may hold the key to stopping him.

Billy flees into a subway station, where he encounters the very man he helped, the homeless helper who gives him a subway token and reminds him that debts can be paid. The token glows in Billy’s pocket, and as he pulls it out, he crackles with lightning, and visions flash of his past life—the headstones of his parents and the orphanage where he grew up. He steps into a hidden chamber with statues of the Seven Deadly Sins, and there he meets the Wizard Shazam, James Garner, who explains that Adam was the champion chosen five millennia ago but used his power for personal gain and was banished.

The Wizard’s chamber collapses around Billy as he narrowly escapes, and the world outside roils with a rampaging Black Adam. The battle resumes as the two powerhouses push toward a decisive showdown, while Billy, still learning the breadth of his new abilities, discovers a pattern: the powers come and go with the utterance of the Wiz ard’s name, and any misstep could strip him of his gifts.

A newly arrived Superman returns to the fray and is not sure what to make of this sudden, crimson-clad ally, but the two now share a common goal: stopping Black Adam. The fight intensifies as Adam threatens to flood Fawcett City by destroying a dam, aiming to separate Captain Marvel from Superman for an easier kill. Adam flips a car with a hostage inside to force Billy’s surrender, but Billy fights back and, right before Adam can snatch him away, a heroic shot from Superman blasts Adam, halting the flood and buying time. Superman uses his heat vision—an ability that Black Adam cannot match—to subdue the villain in a heated confrontation that rocks the city.

Billy finally embraces his power at full strength, transforms into Captain Marvel, and counters Adam’s assault with a combination of speed, strength, and flight. The battle becomes two against one as Captain Marvel and Superman press their advantage, chasing Black Adam across the city streets. Adam retaliates by laying waste to the ground, declaring that he will not be stopped. He breaks away long enough to corner Billy and extract a confession: he must surrender his mortal self so the hostages can be released, or else more will suffer. In a desperate gambit, Black Adam silences Billy’s voice with a brutal grip, drawing heat vision and a final, fatal blow that would end the boy’s life—if not for a startling arrival.

The homeless man reappears and reveals himself as Tawky Tawny, Billy’s guardian angel in disguise. Tawky Tawny transforms into his true tiger form, promising to take Billy far beyond this world so that the Wizard can send Adam farther than ever before. In a shocking turn, Tawky explains that the Wizard is dead, and the plan to banish Adam will require a different path.

With Tawny’s intervention, Black Adam is banished to the far reaches of the universe, a punishment that will slow his return for ten thousand years. The city breathes again as Tawky walks away, and Superman casts a weary, knowing glance at Captain Marvel. In a quiet, closing moment, the bullies from Billy’s earlier life reappear in the alley, testing him with a cruel dare to utter a single word. Billy steadies himself, looks them in the eye, and with a calm confidence says, just one word: Shazam.
