2010, Fengjie, Chongqing—the film opens on the bow of a boat where Dong Zi releases ashes from an urn into the Yangtze River, a quiet, somber moment that immediately signals themes of memory, debt, and the weight of family history that will echo throughout the story.

A flashback travels back to 2004 in Sichuan, where Dong Zi works side by side with his mentor Xi Jun as debt collectors. He has been with Jun for about six months, while his father battles illness and his mother has already passed away. Dong Zi is driven to earn money to cover his father’s mounting medical bills, and he harbors a quiet crush on the tattoo artist Jiuer. Jiuer’s ex-husband, Mr. Four, resurfaces with a demand to remarry, but she refuses, setting up a tense triangle that shadows Dong Zi’s every move. Jun warns him not to let his feelings complicate matters, especially given Jiuer’s history with Four. The boss later discovers that Jun has been skimming funds from the operation, and Jun takes a brutal beating as punishment. After the humiliation, Jun ends his relationship and shifts to working at a karaoke bar, while Four’s looming presence continues to cast a dark cloud over everyone.

Dong Zi and Jiuer visit his father in the hospital, where his father creates a scene and insists that Dong Zi not sleep with Jiuer. Jiuer gathers her things from Four’s home and reveals she’s moving to Hunan. When Dong Zi is summoned to the police station, it’s revealed that his father has been running a quasi-brothel from his apartment, enabling an affair that complicates the family’s already fragile balance. The conflict reaches a breaking point when Dong Zi yanks the urn away from his father during a fight, and in a moment of raw vulnerability, Dong Zi kowtows before him and proclaims, “In my next life, I’ll come back as your dad.”

Dong Zi carries the urn to the tattoo parlor, only to find Jiuer has packed up the shop. She still leaves him a gift—a tattoo—and tells him she’s subletting the space. He longs to go with her, but the weight of caring for his ailing father keeps him rooted in place. He watches Jiuer depart, but the sense of impending loss lingers.

As the hospital bill clock ticks down, Dong Zi’s thoughts take a dangerous turn—he fantasizes a violent and uncontrolled return to debt collection. In a daydream, he imagines kidnapping the daughter of a delinquent debtor and threatening to ignite a bundle of firecrackers attached to himself, a brutal image of desperation. He ultimately abandons that fantasy, selling his motorbike instead to pay down the hospital debt.

The tension escalates when Four orders his thugs to remove Dong Zi—and to “take care of” the father if necessary. The thugs catch Dong Zi’s father in a moment of despair, as he stands on the edge of self-harm, a suicide note already in progress. They intervene, but the father collapses from a heart attack and is rushed back to the hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, Four’s grip tightens as his thugs trash the clothing store owned by Jun’s ex, who then leaves for Guangzhou. Jun retaliates by hiring more thugs to attack Four and retrieve the combination to his safe.

Jiuer returns to the hospital and learns of Dong Zi’s plight. She expresses affection for him, saying she likes him because he looks at her without ulterior motives, and she reveals that they have never slept together. Her confession comes as a bittersweet moment, just as Dong Zi’s father passes away.

Jiuer attempts to reach Dong Zi by phone, but he does not answer. When she tracks down a familiar old motorbike and runs after it, she is struck by Jun’s car. Jun lifts her into his vehicle and drives away, while Four manages to escape his pursuers. Dong Zi discovers Jiuer’s ambulance transport and races toward the hospital, where Jiuer’s belongings—still in Four’s possession—are left behind as Four himself breaks down in tears.

The aftermath unfolds along the Yangtze as Dong Zi confronts Jun and orders him to leave and never return. Jun apologizes, insisting the act wasn’t intentional. The final image lingers on Dong Zi as he drifts into a trance, haunted by the losses of his parents and Jiuer, the old words his father spoke echoing in his mind as the river carries the story forward.
