Kesavan, Sekar, and Pagalavan are three friends who are newly short on money and trying to find ways to get by. Their luck takes a strange turn when they cross paths with Das, a middle-aged man who makes a living from small-time kidnappings and who operates with a rigid code, even enlisting his imaginary girlfriend Shalu as a sort of anchor to his peculiar worldview. The trio, sensing an opening, decides to become his assistants, hoping that tagging along with a seasoned kidnapper could finally put some money in their pockets. Das, in turn, lays out five rules of kidnapping—one of which is famously written as “kednaping”—and expects everyone to follow them.

The story kicks into gear when Das and his new team snag a boy and demand a ransom from his father, Nambikkai Kannan, a moment that seems to validate Das’s method. Around this time, Nambikkai’s contractor brother has been arrested on bribery charges tied to the State Minister Gnanodayam, a principled politician who stands in contrast to the unscrupulous world around him. Impressed by Das’s knack for extraction, Nambikkai proposes a higher-stakes job: kidnap Arumai Pragasam, Gnanodayam’s son, with a hefty payday of up to ₹20 million. After some initial hesitation, Das agrees, swayed by Kesavan, Sekar, and Pagalavan, who see a bigger payoff if they push ahead.

But the plan takes a sharp turn the very next day when Arumai is already snatched by another group. The Das gang ends up kidnapping Arumai from the other captors and discovers that the initial abduction was orchestrated by Arumai himself to extort money from his father. Instead of backing away, Arumai charms the kidnappers into collaborating, promising to share the ransom from his father and to help them cash in on the scheme. The group targets a windfall of Rs. 20 million, and for a moment, the future looks prosperous—until a heated argument over how to split the cash sends their van careening off a bridge. Arumai escapes with the money, and the minister quickly mobilizes his resources to bring the gang to heel through the help of Bramma, an encounter specialist with a ruthless streak.

The pursuit grows personal and brutal. Arumai returns home and hides the money in his room, while Das orchestrates a second kidnapping to recover the cash. A tense reunion leads to a tense standoff in which Das allows Arumai to walk free, provided he keeps quiet about the crew and even promises to return their share. Bramma insists on testifying against the gang, pressing Arumai to tell the truth. In a brutal confrontation at a remote location, Bramma and his team overpower the group in a dark room. An improvised, illegal pistol tucked away in Bramma’s police jeep misfires in an embarrassing turn of events, giving Das and his companions just enough time to escape. In a cruel twist, Arumai’s father bursts in with the money bag only to find it filled with newspapers; Arumai had moved the real cash elsewhere and then handed over a portion to the Das gang.

The fallout of the operation ripples through politics as the chief minister calls Arumai to his office and asks him to stand as a candidate in the upcoming general elections, replacing his corruption-averse father who has failed to deliver. The minister sees in Arumai a sharp, calculating future income—potentially as high as Rs. 3 billion over five years—and he appoints Arumai as a minister, making him a peer and power broker within the party. Kesavan and Sekar become trusted advisers, while Pagalavan pivots into acting. Das, meanwhile, continues his kidnapping work with a fresh gang, now taking on a new set of targets and schemes.

The trail thickens as Das and his crew kidnap a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Shalu, only to discover that she is Shalini Gupta, the daughter of a minister. The cycle of deception and risk continues, and through it all Das maintains the edge that first drew them together. In the end, Das’s world—built on ruses, shifting loyalties, and high-stakes gambles—shows that his first rule of kidnapping remains both the guide and the trap he cannot quite escape.
