George Pemberton is an ambitious timber baron in Depression-era North Carolina who meets and falls for Serena Shaw, a sharp-wisted woman with a painful past. They marry, and she moves onto his land, where her presence reshapes the dynamic of his enterprise and tests his authority even as she wears a charcoal-smile of affection. The union draws the attention of George’s business circle, and Buchanan, his trusted partner, begins to feel squeezed as Serena’s influence grows, quietly steering decisions and questions toward her own aims.

The partnership strains under her interventions, and Buchanan strikes a risky deal with the local sheriff who covets George’s land for a park. Hurt by betrayal, George starts to see the truth in Serena’s insistence that Buchanan was never a true friend, even as the couple clings to a shared image of loyalty. On a hunting trip with Buchanan, the two men track a bear, and in a tense moment George contemplates ending their feud with a fatal shot. He fires first, killing Buchanan, a deed witnessed by Campbell but later dismissed to the Sheriff as an accident. Serena consoles George and justifies the action, weaving a narrative that binds him to her even more firmly.

The couple’s life becomes entangled with Rachel, the mother of an illegitimate son named Jacob. When George spots Jacob posing with his mother for a photo, he feels a sense of responsibility and begins sending money to Rachel. Serena remains unaware of the money, yet she views Rachel and the baby as growing threats to their precarious alliance. In a separate crisis, Galloway, a loyal worker, loses his hand to an errant axe swing, and Serena acts decisively, using a belt as a tourniquet to save his life. George rushes Serena to the hospital when she experiences heavy bleeding and pain; the pregnancy ends in a miscarriage, leaving Serena unable to bear children again. As the personal stakes rise, the question of paternity around Rachel’s baby becomes more urgent and unsettling for Serena.

A shadowy plot thickens when Campbell steals the ledgers from the safe and brings them to the Sheriff, intending to testify that George has been bribing a senator and deliberately shooting Buchanan. Realizing the depth of the exposed secret, George and Serena understand that Campbell’s evidence could ruin them. Galloway privately tells Serena that he knows Campbell’s location and informs George that a panther roams the forest, diverting their attention to other matters. In a bold and dangerous move, Galloway travels to town to kill Campbell and retrieve the ledgers, while Serena discovers a hidden photograph—George’s image of Rachel and her baby—and reacts by striking the baby’s image from the picture, a cruel flash of possessive jealousy.

Serena leaves with Galloway, insisting she has business to tend to, and the couple pursues separate paths. When they cannot find Rachel at home, they head toward Widow Jenkins’ house, as Vaughn, George’s employee, calls the Sheriff worried about Rachel’s fate. The Sheriff arrives at Widow Jenkins’ and finds her dead from a throat-slashing, taking Rachel and her baby into protective custody. In the morning, the Sheriff confronts George with the news that Galloway has murdered Campbell and Widow Jenkins and that he remains a threat to Rachel and her child. George asks Serena if she sent Galloway to eliminate Rachel and Jacob; she insists the steps taken were essential. He storms away, and when Serena follows, a brief choke marks a moment of raw emotion before he drives off with the ledgers.

Determined to protect Rachel, George goes to the Sheriff and offers the ledgers, promising to surrender if he can locate Rachel and her child. He races to save them, while Galloway tracks Rachel to the train station. Rachel hides in a shed as the train approaches, and George confronts Galloway just as Rachel leaps onto the moving train. He pursues, slashing Galloway’s throat, and bids farewell to the mother and child as they depart to live with Vaughn. George returns to the camp, where the hunt for the panther resumes—he corners the creature and dies in a fatal recoil of wounds, slaying the beast with a hunting knife after it strikes.

The Sheriff brings George’s body back to the Pemberton cabin, where Serena, who had expected his return, refuses to identify him. In a final act of defiance and despair, she sets the cabin ablaze with a lighter, choosing a solitary end as the flames consume the home and all inside.
