Veeraiya, [Vikram], is a hard-edged naxalite who, with his tight-knit gang, keeps the local police off balance by hijacking patrols, torching vehicles, and using cunning traps that end in brutal confrontations. In the eyes of the villagers, he is more of a local protector than a criminal, a man who has carved out a parallel sphere of influence in the rural outskirts near Tirunelveli, aided by his brothers Singarasan, [Prabhu], and Sakkarai, [Munna Simon]. This fragile balance between fear and reverence defines Veeraiya’s world, where law and order are blurred and loyalty to kin often blurs into justice as Veeraiya sees it.

During a calm boating trip, Raagini Subramaniam, [Aishwarya Rai Bachchan], is suddenly kidnapped by Veeraiya, and her husband, Dev Prakash Subramaniam, [Prithviraj Sukumaran], an IPS officer, is immediately alerted to the crisis. The operation unfolds against a backdrop of a community that both admires Veeraiya’s daring and trembles at the cost of civil order. Veeraiya, who has built a rough, autonomous rule book, abducts Raagini as a calculated move to avenge the death of his sister, Vennila, [Priyamani], a tragedy that weighs heavily on him and shapes the gang’s actions. Veeraiya brings Raagini to a cliff with the intent to kill her, but Raagini refuses to surrender to death, leaping into the waters below in a defiant act that shocks Veeraiya and shakes the resolve of everyone watching.

The attempt to end Raagini’s life backfires on a deeper level, as Veeraiya finds himself unable to strike down someone who faces death without flinching. The police, led by Dev and aided by Gnanaprakasam, [Karthik Muthuraman], a dedicated local forest guard, push into the forest in a bid to close the gap and bring Veeraiya in. Yet the search proves elusive, highlighting the harsh, tangled terrain and Veeraiya’s grasp on the forest’s edges. Raagini returns to a troubling realization: Dev had previously led an encounter against Veeraiya during Vennila’s wedding, and Dev’s shot grazed Veeraiya’s neck, a detail that threads the past violence into the present confrontation.

Behind the scenes, the weight of past actions bears down on Veeraiya. He discovers that Vennila’s death stems from the brutal pressure and torture that followed her refusal to reveal Veeraiya’s hideout to the police, a cycle that culminates in Vennila’s suicide by drowning in a well. The revelation hardens Veeraiya’s stance and strains the fragile truce between the rebels and the state, pushing the conflict toward a final, high-stakes reckoning. Sakkarai, weary of the escalating bloodshed, pushes for a ceasefire, a proposal that Dev initially receives with guarded consideration. When Sakkarai arrives at Dev’s camp, Dev shoots him, underscoring Dev’s willingness to prioritize the destruction of Veeraiya over saving Raagini.

Veera and Singarasu retaliate with a furious assault on Dev’s encampment, wiping it out in a brutal, climactic confrontation. The two sides collide on a rickety bridge, where Veeraiya gains the upper hand against Dev, yet spares him when Dev hints that Raagini’s safety hinges on Veeraiya’s life. Dev escapes the collapse of the standoff, only to find Raagini bound and restrained, and Veeraiya leaving her behind as he withdraws. A tense homeward journey to Tiruchirappalli follows, where Dev accuses Raagini of infidelity, claiming Veeraiya had whispered a betrayal. The truth surfaces when Raagini, furious, confronts Veeraiya and discovers Dev’s lie—an attempt to force Raagini to reveal Veeraiya’s whereabouts.

In a dramatic turn, Dev arrives with a police unit to close the net around Veeraiya. Raagini makes a last, desperate bid to shield Veeraiya, but Veeraiya shields her with his life. He is mortally wounded, his body succumbing to the gunfire as Raagini reaches out one final time. Though their fingers do not clasp, the gesture marks a mutual, quiet: the woman who stood by him cared for him to the end, and Veeraiya dies with a faint, contented smile, knowing he was loved.
